Store wars: Apple's app store races ahead of rivals

08/01/2013

Despite the fact that Google and Microsoft continue to record booming sales in their respective app stores, Apple's App Store continues to lead the way and has today (January 8th) passed the 40 billion download mark.

Competition is heating up following Google's announcement that its own Play Store had reached 25 billion downloads within six months of launching, and Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services, Eddy Cue, is now pledging continued investment in the App Store in order to enable the development of yet more applications.

There are currently around 775,000 apps available in the App Store, with some 7 billion dollars being pocketed by developers in the four years since the platform launched.

Recent research by App Annie suggests that the market is set to become even more competitive in the coming years, after the report indicated a 311 per cent growth rate for Google's Play Store between January and October last year ? despite the fact it was not officially launched until March.
