Accent Furniture For the Bedroom | DirectBuy Home Improvement Blog

Bedroom FurnitureThere are various ways to incorporate accent furniture in the bedroom so that it can serve as a decorative part of the decor as well as a functional part of the room design.? These enhance your traditional bedroom furniture pieces while adding more style to the space.

Choosing seating for the bedroom

It?s very convenient to have some type of chair included in your bedroom design. If space allows, one or two comfortable accent chairs would be ideal in the bedroom. There are some wonderfully unique accent chairs that would enhance any bedroom decor. However, if space is limited, a bench seat with storage or a decorative trunk with a sturdy top placed at the foot of the bed might be the best or only option.

Accent Tables For The Bedroom

An accent table placed beside of a chair creates an ideal reading area in the bedroom. Splurging on a unique, artistically decorative accent table to fill an empty space in the bedroom will make the room more attractive. Corner tables and vanity tables are always attractive in a bedroom.

With a little creativity you can add accent furniture such as a coat rack, magazine table or bookcase to your bedroom design. Accent pieces are beneficial in completing the overall design of a room.

DirectBuy has beautiful accent furniture for every room of your home as well as the bedroom.? Get information on how you can find furniture and accent pieces for your home at confidential dealer pricing.

Parenting Raises Similar Intimacy Challenges on Gays and Straights

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on June 28, 2012

Parenting Places Similar Intimacy Challenges on Gays and StraightsA new study discovers some gay male couples make significant lifestyle changes as they parent a child. And gay parents tend to face many of the same challenges as straight parents when it comes to sex and intimacy after having children.

The life changes may reduce the risk of HIV, according to researchers writing?in the journal Couple and Family Psychology. However, not all gay parents will change their lifestyle and become monogamous, highlighting the need to continue prevention efforts.

?When gay couples become parents, they become very focused on the kids, they are tired, there is less time for communication and less desire for sex,? said Colleen Hoff, Ph.D., professor of sexuality studies at San Francisco State University. ?They go through a lot of the same changes as heterosexual couples who have kids.?

Researchers report that nationwide, approximately one in five gay male couples is raising children.

In the study, Hoff and colleagues investigated if becoming a parent causes gay dads to change their lifestyle in ways that protect them from risky sexual behavior, or if the stress of parenting leads to increased health risks such as infidelity and unprotected sex with outside partners.

The researchers interviewed 48 gay male couples who are raising children together.

?We found that gay fathers have less time for sex and less emphasis on sexuality, which could mean they are at less risk for HIV,? Hoff said. ?Many fathers said they feel a sense of responsibility toward their children which motivates them to avoid risky sexual behavior.?

Many of the couples reported that having children increased their commitment to each other and deepened their relationship. Fathers reported they gained a new admiration for their partner as they observed them parenting.

Although the frequency of sex declined after becoming parents, gay couples generally found this to acceptable. ?From the fathers we studied, there was this pragmatic acceptance that this is what happens at this stage of life,? Hoff said.

One surprising finding is that becoming parents did not affect the couples? sexual agreements ? the contracts that many gay male couples make about whether sex with outside partners is allowed.

?There wasn?t the shift that we thought we might find,? Hoff said. ?For the most part, those who were monogamous before becoming parents said they stayed with that arrangement. Those who had open relationships before having children reported that they kept to that agreement.?

Clearly while some of the lifestyle changes associated with parenthood might reduce HIV risk for monogamous gay couples, the study suggests problems could arise for couples with open sexual agreements.

Typically, these couples have fewer opportunities to discuss their sexual agreements with each other, and a few men said that once they became a parent they felt uncomfortable talking to their friends or their doctor about the fact that they are in an open relationship.

?Some men felt that there is this assumption that if you are a gay parent you are monogamous,? Hoff said. ?This kind of stigma around gay parents? sexuality could be a concern if gay fathers are reluctant to talk to their physician about their sexual agreement and get tested for HIV.?

Researchers said the study shows that gay men do not all become monogamous when they become a parent. As such, physicians and counselors should allow a gay man the opportunity to discuss sexual agreements and to have access to testing services.

In particular, the study highlights the need for HIV prevention programs to find alternative ways to reach gay fathers since they spend less time in gay social venues where sexual health messages are typically promoted.

In this Thursday, June 28, 2012 photo, embers of the Free Syrian Army are seen in a neighborhood of Damascus, Syria. Much of the violence that has gripped Syria has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several huge suicide bombings this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the battle. A bomb blast rocked central Damascus on Thursday near a busy market and the country's main justice complex, wounding at least three people and sending a cloud of black smoke into the air. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? The top U.S. and Russian diplomats have held talks on Syria ahead of an international conference on Saturday that aims to ease Syrian President Bashar Assad from power.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met for about an hour Friday in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.

Lavrov told reporters afterward that the two "are agreeing on most things."

The former Cold War foes have clashed repeatedly since violence broke out in Syria 16 months ago.

The U.S. wants Assad to leave power. Russia opposes any "external meddling" in Syrian affairs.

The U.S., Russia and other world powers are gathering in Geneva on Saturday. U.N. mediator Kofi Annan wants them to agree on a plan calling for a national unity government in Syria.

Nutley Real Estate: Homes For Sale in Nutley NJ

Nutley Real Estate: Homes For Sale in Nutley NJ

Thinking about buying a home in Nutley New Jersey?

These days the words ?bank owned homes? have become practically synonymous with a single word: ?opportunity.?? With prices and mortgage rates this low, first time home buyers, investors and seasoned property owners alike are looking at a raft of buying options unlike any Nutley has seen in a very long time.

That option of buying a bank owned home has certainly opened a viable route for those looking to own a home at the fraction of what it cost just a few years ago. But not without a price:? the best Nutley bank owned home bargains are almost certain to fall into the ?fixer-upper? category.

When considering the purchase of one of our Nutley bank owned homes, I?ve found that my most successful clients have a few qualities in common:

-???????? patience ? they wait until they?ve found a house that suits all their needs

-???????? prudence ? they resist the temptation to take out too big of a loan

-???????? realism ? they know how much hard work they will be willing to put into the house

Finding the right fixer-upper should be approached as a process: in other words, never buy the first home you see until after you?ve checked out some of its competition. There are more foreclosures on the market than ever ? a phenomenon that works to your advantage. When you do find the right home, make sure to take out a loan that makes sense. Often people who are in a hurry to buy a house are tempted to take out a loan without giving enough consideration to its immediate and long-term implications.? Being coolly realistic as you work out the numbers will pay off for a long time.

Once a bank owned home is officially yours, the hard (often fun!) work begins. Buying a home in need of repair has always been the surest way to find a deal, but it is also the way to improve or develop home maintenance skills, bond with family members, and keep a tight rein on the family budget. Here, too, you need to be careful not to get carried away? you don?t want to overbuild or overdevelop beyond what is appropriate for the neighborhood setting. In other words, keep your end goals in mind.? My advice to clients varies depending on their individual needs: Is it an income property?? Or the family home for the next 15 years?

Foreclosures show no signs of slowing down in the near future, so this May?s buying market is opportune.? If you?re considering buying a bank owned home in Nutley, call me today to go over your options and to put a plan into action!

Roosevelt's "Dream of Nirvana" - Easton Walled Gardens

You've got to hand it to Lady Ursula Cholmeley - she's got courage, stamina and a project in progress that would make most of us tremble at the knees - the restoration of Easton Walled Gardens in Lincolnshire. Family home of the Cholmeleys since 1592, the house that used to stand on the site - Easton Hall - was pulled down in 1951. It was requisitioned at the start of World War II, but the soldiers stationed there caused so much damage to the property that restoration was not an option. Eye witness reports of their occupation tell of constant gunfire within the house and grenades being lobbed into the greenhouses!

The 12-acre gardens were left untouched after the demolition and it was only in 1999 that a plan was hatched to revive them.?Ursula has completely embraced the challenge of restoring this wonderful landscape and remains calm, serene and most importantly, hugely enthusiastic about her work.?With vistas and architectural features like these, who wouldn't be daunted by the prospect of bringing these ancient gardens back to life? But Lady Cholmeley is the most unassuming member of the aristocracy I've met and refers to herself as "custodian" of the gardens, rather than owner. And she's totally committed to her project.

President Roosevelt stayed here and described the garden as "a dream of Nirvana ... almost too good to be true". His parents were friends of the Cholmeleys and he spent part of his honeymoon here with his new wife Eleanor in 1905. But neither he nor the Cholmeley family could have foreseen the tragedy that would befall Easton in the next fifty years, after two wars and a half century of neglect. Today the only surviving buildings are the gatehouse and stableyard, which have been restored to provide a shop and restaurant, and the original architectural features of the garden remain including steps, walls and bridges.

Work began at Easton in 2002 and now, ten years later, there's plenty for the visitor to see, not just in terms of ongoing restoration work, but thanks to the new cottage garden, turf maze, borders and meadows that are permanent eye catchers. Visitors come from all over the country for the annual Sweet Pea Week (1st - 8th July this year - open daily from 11.00-16.00). But the garden you see today has come a long way from the completely overgrown jungle that faced the Cholmeleys on day one. As recently as 2000, you couldn't walk through the gardens at all because they were covered with brambles!

Easton Walled Gardens are open throughout the season Wednesday - Friday and Sundays, from 11.00-16.00. Admission is ?6.25 for adults and ?2 for children. Other gardens nearby include Grimsthorpe Castle and Barnsdale, but you will need several hours to savour the 12 acres here. You can't avoid being infected by the pervading sense of joy here, as new life is breathed back into these ancient gardens. Definitely one to watch and re-visit regularly as work progresses.

Zynga reveals 'FarmVille 2,' new social gaming network

1 hr.

The company behind "FarmVille," revealed Tuesday that a?sequel?to its enormously popular Facebook game is in the works and that it is creating a social network of its very own to bring gamers together.

In San Francisco during an event at Zynga's headquarters, the company unveiled a host of new ?games and?also took the wraps off its Zynga With Friends network, which it?describes as "a?unified experience that will connect all players on any platform."

The event comes at a time when the company's?stock has?slid?well below its December 2011 $10 IPO price and as its Facebook user numbers have been declining.

But during Tuesday "Zynga Unleashed" event, Mark Pincus, founder and CEO of Zynga, said?the company was showing off "the products and technology that represent the next generation of Zynga."

"Our pipeline of new games represents more genres of play that expand our audience, more mobile ways to play and more dimensions of play that will deliver the next generation of fun and social," he said.?

The most important news from Tuesday's event was Zynga's revelation that it is trying to spread its wings and fly the Facebook coop ? to a degree. Zynga said it is working on its own Zynga With Friends network ? an attempt to bring all its players together under one umbrella, as well as?reduce its dependence on the social network giant.

The company said the?Zynga With Friends network?will connect gamers playing on Facebook, iOS, Android, Zynga.com and?elsewhere.?It's not clear when the network will officially launch, but officials said?Zynga with Friends will include a virtual?lobby where you can see what your friends are playing, the ability to?live?chat with other players, the ability to go?head-to-head in multiplayer matches, and a live "Social Stream" where you can get access items you need to advance your games.

New social network or not, the San Francisco company?is still well tied?to Facebook ? the place where hits like "FarmVille," "Texas HoldEm Poker" and "Mafia Wars" have taken?off. And Zynga announced that it is bringing a?variety?of new games to Facebook as well.

Zynga didn't reveal much about "FarmVille 2" other than to say it was "coming soon." But it is big news, considering that the first "FarmVille" launched back in 2009 and skyrocketed to popularity on Facebook. With age, however, it has bled users. According to AppData, it currently boasts?21.7 million monthly active users, down from some 60 million monthly active users at its peak.

On the heels of "FarmVille's" success, Zynga has kept a fresh flow of "Ville"-themed games coming ? i.e.?"CityVille" and "CastleVille." And on Tuesday the company outlined?two more games coming to the franchise. One is called simply "The Ville," and the other is called "ChefVille."

Zynga calls "The Ville" its "most social game to-date." According to a?press release, "The Ville" will have players build the (virtual)?home of their dreams. The release explains: "The more people you interact with the more happiness you obtain in the game. As you level up in the game you unlock new objects for your home, and by building relationships with other avatars you unlock new interactions."

That probably sounds very?familiar to anyone who has played one of the games from Electronic Arts'?long-running "Sims" franchise. But we'll see for sure Wednesday, when "The Ville" launches on Facebook (it's also coming "soon" to Zynga.com).

Meanwhile, in "ChefVille" players will create personalized?kitchens?and cook up a variety of?dishes (pizza,?steak Florentine, orange chicken, etc.). When you master a virtual?dish, you'll be sent an email containing?the recipe so you can?cook it?in your real-world?kitchen. Zynga says "ChefVille" is coming soon to both?Facebook and Zynga.com.

But the Ville franchise wasn't the only one to get new games.?Zynga also announced that its fifth game in the?"With Friends" series?(think "Words with Friends")?has launched on iOS devices today. The latest game is called "Matching With Friends," and is a social puzzle game in which players match color blocks on a game board (see trailer above).

Unfortunately for Zynga, the Unleashed event did not unleash a stock rally for the company.?Zynga shares closed 5 percent lower on Tuesday.

Cyborg system stifles your need to drink water

    17 hrs.

The Japanese design studio Takram was asked to design a water bottle for people to use after a hypothetical future environmental disaster. Takram, imagining what a world would be like with rising sea levels and radioactive disasters, thought that we probably wouldn?t be carrying around water bottles. Instead, they designed an entirely new organ system, to be implanted in the body, that would mean we used less water in the first place.

Its solution, called the Hydrolemic System, involves both harvesting more moisture from the air than our current unmodified bodies are capable of, and also doing more to retain the water we have. The company imagines that system would require us to drink 0.1 cups of water a day.

Inserts that go in our noses convert moisture in the air we breathe into water, and other inserts at the ends of our renal and digestive systems keep water from leaving by those routes. A collar on our neck helps prevent perspiration by turning our body heat into electricity, so it doesn?t make us perspire, losing precious liquid.

Click through the slide show for more details.

Let's?hope for a world in which our designers are just designing water bottles with more convenient handles, rather than ones you have to go to the hospital to have installed.

Fabricio Werdum snaps Mike Russow?s win streak at UFC 147

Fabricio Werdum made his case to join the crowded top of the UFC's heavyweight division with a knockout of Mike Russow at UFC 147 in Brazil on Saturday night.

Werdum bloodied Russow's face early in the clinch. He leveled Russow with an uppercut, then followed with several punches and hammerfists until the fight was stopped at 2:28 in the first round.

As the crowd chanted his nickname, "Vai Cavalo," Werdum jumped on top of the cage to celebrate and nearly fell off. Once he recovered, Werdum asked for a title shot against Junior dos Santos.

"I respect 'Cigano,' but I'm ready for him," Werdum said after the bout.

Werdum was knocked out by dos Santos when they fought in 2008. Since then, Werdum moved to Strikeforce, where he beat Fedor Emelianenko, but lost to Alistair Overeem. He now has two wins back in the UFC.

This is Russow's first loss since he was submitted by Sergei Kharitonov in 2007.

Reconciling religious identity and reproductive practices: the Church and contraception in Poland.

    Source

University of Central Florida, Department of Anthropology, Orlando, Florida 32816, USA. jmishtal@mail.ucf.edu

    Abstract

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE:

After the fall of state socialism in Poland in 1989, a Catholic-nationalist government assumed power. The new political power of the Catholic Church resulted in severe restrictions on family planning (FP) services. Yet, Poland's fertility rate declined sharply, suggesting that women are controlling their fertility despite restrictions. This study examined the Church's influence on women's contraceptive decisions, and how women reconcile religious teachings with their contraceptive use.

    METHODS:

We conducted a mixed-methods study, including a cross-sectional survey and qualitative interviews, in Gda?sk, Poland with sexually active women aged 18-40. The quantitative sample included 418 respondents; the qualitative sample included 49 respondents.

    RESULTS:

Despite restrictions on FP services, modern contraceptive use among our sample was 56%, up from 19% in 1991. Catholicism played a relatively small role in respondents' contraceptive decisions; though 94.2% of respondents were Catholic, 79% reported that the Church had little or no influence on reproductive decisions. Women's explanations for how they reconcile their reproductive practices with Catholicism included using elements of religion to support contraceptive use, prioritising responsibility for family and financial considerations over the Church's prohibitions, and challenging the Church's credibility in FP matters.

    CONCLUSIONS:

Our findings underscore women's struggles under post-socialist reproductive policies that limit FP access. Despite religious, political, and economic obstacles, contraceptive use has increased dramatically, indicating that FP is a high priority for women in Poland. Policies should respond to women's needs. Comprehensive, state-sponsored FP and sex education are urgently needed and the state should legitimise such services.

There is no shortage of successful programs in the Class 4A Narrows League.

Despite that, South Kitsap's tennis team featured both the boys (Dakota Giddings) and girls (Kailyn Skjonsby) league champions. Both also qualified for state.

For those reasons, Todd Olson is the Port Orchard Independent's Coach of the Year.

Skjonsby credits Olson for much of her success.

"He's meant everything to me," she said. "I began taking lessons from him when I was 9 years old."

When Olson took over the school's girls program a decade ago, he said he had about 20 students try out. A few years later, that number reached 90. Skjonsby said that is because Olson makes the sport fun while expecting them to work hard at the same time.

"He inspires everyone to improve," she said.

Olson said he had to generate interest in the program to build a winner.

"Just having those numbers in a sport like tennis where it is not offered at the junior high is the only way to build a successful program," he said.

That is part of the legacy he will leave. Olson told his team during a June 11 meeting that he will not return next season.

"I'm taking a little bit of a break," said Olson, whose wife, Heather, expects their second child in November. "Our family is growing, so there's no way I would have time to continue to coach."

He said he would consider coaching the Wolves again later when his children ? Olson and his wife also have a 2-year-old son ? are older.

Olson, who had invasive melanoma a few years ago, said his reason for stepping down solely was based on spending more time with his family.

"All my health is really good," said Olson, adding that he always has tried to stay upbeat. "Right now it is in remission and hopefully it stays that way."

Eric Bergeson, a longtime soccer coach for the Wolves who also was Olson's predecessor, filled in for him during most of that season.

"He was there for me," Olson said. "Hopefully he knows I would reciprocate."

Bergeson has helped coordinate several community-service programs at the school, including "Nothing But Nets," which provides insecticide treated mosquito bed nets to communities in Africa to combat the spread of malaria. Olson's tennis teams have been active in that and other charity events, including gathering 300 food items for donation within 16 hours.

"It's cool that our team can be this powerful," Olson said. "There's not many teams that do community-service projects."

In addition to being involved, his teams regularly had a presence at state. The highlight might have been Stephanie Davison, who won 4A state singles titles in 2004-05 before continuing onto the University of Texas. But Olson also featured several other league championships and state performers.

"The success of our program kind of hit me when I had two Rubbermaid tubs filled with trophies," he said.

Olson, who will continue to work with some players during the offseason, said he was grateful for the effort his players put in to develop the program. During his first season, Olson said some players who comment on how they won their match even though the team lost.

"They didn't understand when I took over the girls program that there was a team concept," he said.

That was a mentality Olson was raised with in sports. As a high-school student in Wyoming, Olson was a pitcher and a third baseman. He thought he would follow in the footsteps of his older sister, Cassie, who was a volleyball player at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. But similar to many baseball players, Olson only was offered a partial scholarship. When Montana State University Billings offered him a full scholarship to play tennis, Olson said it was a "no-brainer."

He later met his wife, who is from Chehalis, and also played tennis for the Yellowjackets. After graduating, the couple decided to settle in the Puget Sound region. Before he came to South, Olson was a tennis instructor at the Balley's fitness clubs in Olympia and Tacoma. He coached some future Wolves in that position when they were in elementary school.

Olson has continued forging relationships with students throughout his tenure, which he said will be the most difficult aspect of not coaching next year. But he said he has no regrets.

"It was a family decision," he said, "and it wasn't tough for me to step away for my family."

Did Sprint just out the HTC EVO 4G LTE in white?

    White EVO 4G

Not too awful long ago Nkawal asked in the EVO 4G LTE forums when we would see the EVO 4G LTE in white. Well, Nkawal, we don't have a specific date but we think it won't be too long now, as Sprint has a white and silver E4GLTE in a site promotion ad for a $100 service credit.

Sprint has carried some of the previous EVO models in white, and they were pretty popular sellers. We expect to see this one in white as well, but we may be looking at a photoshop fail. We've asked Sprint, and we'll let you know if they have good news.

The Skinny: It's not looking good for the Thunder is it? If the series only goes five games it's also bad news for ABC and ESPN because more games means more dollars. Wednesday's headlines include Rupert Murdoch's big deal in Australia, a debate about illegal downloads of music and Aaron Sorkin says the protagonist of his new drama "The Newsroom" was not, repeat not, inspired by Keith Olbermann.

Daily Dose: One might think that an aspirational drama set in a TV newsroom would get rave reviews from critics. That's not the case with "The Newsroom," Aaron Sorkin's new HBO show. ?The Newsroom? gets so bad so quickly that I found my jaw dropping," wrote the New Yorker's Emily Nussbaum. The Huffington Post's Maureen Ryan called it a "dramatically inert, infuriating mess." I've watched 3? episodes and I'll just say the smug is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

Our top story. This Sunday, HBO debuts Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom," a drama set inside a cable news network. Sorkin tells USA Today that "Newsroom" is a "valentine for those people who are out there fighting the good fight." An interesting nugget from the story is Sorkin's dismissal of suggestions by Keith Olbermann that the protagonist is a not-so-loosely based version of the former MSNBC and Current TV personality.?"The character has nothing to do with Keith Olbermann," Sorkin said, adding, "It's not based on or even inspired remotely by Keith, a man who I've spent about five minutes with in my entire life."

Hollywood studio films garnered about three-quarters of China's ticket sales from January through March, leaving Chinese filmmakers wringing their hands at an industry that can't seem to make or promote homegrown films that attract a hometown crowd.

With the gross box office for the first quarter hitting $589 million, up 39% from the same period in 2011, many Chinese directors fear being left behind as more Hollywood films are allowed in under a recent deal cut between Washington and Beijing.

Working with comparatively tiny budgets and with censorship binding one creative hand behind their backs, an all-male gallery of China's leading directors gathered to troubleshoot at the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival on Monday at a forum titled ?Road of Redemption for Chinese-language Films.?

Lu Chuan, director of the 2009 critically acclaimed hit ?City of Life and Death,? said the release of his latest film, ?The Last Supper,? an ancient tale of two rival warlords, had been delayed by the Film Bureau, probably until after the National Party Congress this year.

?The film business is not a tool for propaganda, but a medium for entertainment,? Lu said. ?I made this film in November of last year, but once we finished production, we couldn't predict what would happen in 2012. Girl in the hood. The much-anticipated indie movie "Middle of Nowhere" doesn't stand out just for its plot about a woman who tries to keep her marriage going while her husband is in prison. The movie is also set in South Los Angeles, which most filmmakers avoid and those that don't are usually focused on gang-themed movies, not love stories. ?When people think South-Central or Compton, it?s all 'Boyz n the Hood,' " said?Ava DuVernay, who took home the best drama director at this year's Sundance Film Festival. More on the making of "Middle of Nowhere" from the Los Angeles Times.

The great debate. National Public Radio intern Emily White's blog post detailing her resistance to paying for music she acquires online has lit a fire under the age-old debate about who gets hurts most by illegal downloads and whether it is morally wrong. Musician David Lowery (Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven) wrote an almost-4,000-word response taking White and Generation Y to task. "Congratulations, your generation is the first generation in history to rebel by unsticking it to the man and instead sticking it to the weirdo freak musicians!" Lowery cracked. A look at the back-and-forth from the New York Times.

Stand by your man. Although recent interviews would seem to indicate Charlie Sheen hasn't slowed down too much from his wild ways, FX President John Landgraf has no regrets and thinks the actor's new sitcom "Anger Management" will be huge. Belkin's WeMo home automation gear up for pre-order, iOS current control for under $100

Been quietly pining for Belkin's couch potato home automation solutions? Well, the wait is (almost) over, as the company has finally put its WeMo Switch and Motion products up for pre-order. You can reserve yours through Belkin or Amazon, with the Switch costing $49.99 and the Motion / Switch bundle setting you back a neat $99.99. Apple likes it enough to add the gear to its home-friendly repertoire in-store on the 26th, while other retailers, Verizon included, will be stocking them shortly afterwards. Rig the Switch up to your WiFi at home and you can control the flow of juice from its outlet via the WeMo iOS app (sorry, no Android love). Add in the motion detector and you can set rules for power control based on proximity triggers. Interestingly, Belkin also reports IFTTT integration, meaning the devices can be used for a lot more than the simple on / off remote commands and scheduling we originally thought. For those with iDevices, the free WeMo app is available now, not that it's particularly useful just yet. Need Mo? Check out the official PR and a promotional vid after the break.

Woman drives car onto golf course, into sand trap

UXBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? A woman told police she drove her car into a sand trap on a Massachusetts golf course because her GPS sent her the wrong way.

    Police say she was drunk.

Patricia Maione was held on $10,000 bail after pleading not guilty Tuesday to charges including driving with a suspended license and fourth offense drunken driving.

Authorities say the 47-year-old woman's car got stuck at the Whitinsville Golf Club in Northbridge on Monday. She told police her GPS told her to turn left, which she said led her through a corn field and onto the golf course.

The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/KyIRYF ) reports that police say they found a cup filled with alcohol in her car.

There were golfers on the course at the time, but no one was hurt.

'Color blind' policies could make diversity harder to achieve

    Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Whether it be growing concerns about bias or recognition of the value of diversity, many organizations and institutions have elected to deemphasize race or remove it entirely from their decision-making processes. Yet new evidence from psychological science research suggests that this color-blind approach may not be as effective as people believe it is.

Color blindness offers a seemingly simple way to deal with race: If individuals and institutions do not even notice race, then they cannot act in a biased manner on that basis.

But according to a new article published by Evan Apfelbaum of the MIT Sloan School of Management and colleagues, efforts to ignore race can backfire.

"Shutting our eyes to the complexities of race does not make them disappear," they write in the June issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Apfelbaum and his co-authors, Michael Norton of Harvard Business School and Samuel Sommers of Tufts University, delve into the existing research on the unintended consequences of racial color blindness. For example, in one study, White individuals who avoided mentioning race in conversation were perceived as more biased by Black observers than White individuals who openly talked about race. And another study suggests that people who read arguments promoting color blindness are more likely to display racial bias than people who read arguments promoting multiculturalism.

Because color blindness is difficult to maintain even between two people, it's not surprising that the approach has had mixed results for larger groups. Psychological scientists have found that whether color blindness succeeds at an organization largely depends on how diverse the organization is. Minority applicants perceive diverse organizations that endorse color blindness more favorably than they do predominantly White organizations. Policies that promote color blindness can even lead to racial tension when they are used to support claims of reverse racism by White individuals who believe they are victims of discrimination.

A proposed alternative to colorblindness, according to Apfelbaum and colleagues, is multiculturalism,in which racial differences are openly discussed rather than ignored. Research indicates that when people are encouraged to use a multicultural approach, they are better at understanding the perspectives of other people and better at spotting discrimination when it occurs. The authors acknowledge that multiculturalism isn't perfect either (White individuals can feel alienated by multiculturalism), but they suggest that racial inequities are harder to hide ? and more likely to be corrected ? with a multicultural approach compared to a color-blind one.
