Actor Jeffrey Wright busted for DWI in NYC

It's safe to say Jeffrey Wright's weekend didn't get off to the best start.?The 47-year-old "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" ?actor was busted for DWAI (driving while ability impaired) in New York City early Saturday morning, E! News has confirmed.

According to the NYPD, officers pulled Wright over after they saw him driving erratically, and detected an alcohol odor coming from his vehicle.
Wright was arrested after officers conducted a field sobriety test and he failed it.
The thesp, known for his roles in "Casino Royale" and "Angels in America," will play Beetee in the second installment of the "Hunger Games" ?franchise.
The film is set to hit theaters Nov. 22.

Paneer Jalfrezi
Paneer Jalfrezi is a colorful, healthy Indian Vegetarian dish and a classic among paneer recipes. A low calorie paneer dish that has contrasting textures with melt in the mouth soft paneer and the bell peppers provide a flavorful crunch. It makes for a wonderful filling with wraps and a good side dish with rotis. There are a few variations to Paneer Jafrezi recipe but the one I am posting today is the one I like to hang on to and make pretty often.
You could saute the paneer in oil or ghee till golden brown before adding to the vegetables or use paneer that has been dunked in warm water for 15 minutes. And please do not omit roasted fenugreek powder aka kasuri methi when making this easy vegetarian dish.
Paneer Jalfrezi Recipe
Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 25 min
Yield: 4
Main Ingredients: paneer capsicum
Ingredients
- Paneer - 1/4 kgs, cut into long pieces (1 1/2" length), place in warm water till use
- Onion - 1, medium, finely sliced
- Ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
- Red Capsicum - 1/2 (optional), julienne
- Green Capsicum - 1, julienne
- Baby corn - 4, cut diagonally into 1" pieces (optional)
- Carrot - 1, peel and julienne
- Beans - 3, cut diagonally into 1" pieces (optional)
- Tomato - 1, deseed and slice into long strips
- Tomato puree - 1/4 cup
- Tomato ketchup - 1 tbsp
- Red chili powder - 1 tsp
- Coriander powder - 1 tsp
- Garam Masala powder - pinch
- Kasuri Methi - 1/2 tsp, crushed
- Lemon juice - 1 tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Oil - 1 1/2 tbsps
Method
- Heat oil in a cooking vessel. Once hot, add cumin seeds and allow them to splutter. Add sliced onions and saute for 5 mts. Add ginger garlic paste and saute for 3 mts.
- Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, kasuri methi, coriander powder and salt. Mix well. Add tomato puree and cook for 3 mts. Add sliced beans, carrots and cook for 5 mts on low to medium flame. Mix once in a while.
- Add tomato ketchup and mix. Add capsicum pieces and cook on low to medium flame for 5 mts. Mix once in a while.
- Add the paneer pieces and tomato pieces and mix well. Sprinkle 3-4 tbsps of water and mix well. Cook for 4-5 mts on medium high flame tossing the contents.
- Finally add garam masala and lemon juice and mix well. Turn off flame and remove to a serving bowl. Serve with warm rotis or as filling for wraps.
Tips
- Capsicum and tomatoes are essential ingredients while carrot, beans and baby corn are optional.
- Lemon juice can be substituted with amchur powder (1/2 tsp).
- Paneer pieces can be sauteed in 2-3 tsps oil till lightly brown before adding to the jalfrezi.
- Kalonji or nigella seeds (1/2 tsp) can be added along with cumin seeds at the time of tempering.
Paneer Jalfrezi is a tasty Indian vegetarian dish that goes well with wraps or rotis. Like most Paneer recipes, its healthy, simple, quick and flavorful.

Comet of the century? ISON has 'potential' to be visible all day.
As sun-grazing comet ISON approaches the sun, it's getting progressively brighter ? and might even flare into a dazzling object bright enough to be visible in broad daylight.
Comet ISON was photographed by the Hubble telescope on April 10, 2013 when the comet was 386 million miles from the Sun (slightly closer than Jupiter's orbit). Around the time the 'comet of the century' makes its closest approach to the Sun, on November 28, it may briefly become brighter than the full Moon, say NASA researchers.

As comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) continues to approach the sun, it is slowly responding to the increasing warmth of the sun and getting progressively brighter. The comet is getting considerable scrutiny from both amateur and professional scientists because it's a rare sungrazing comet, destined to approach to within 730,000 miles (1.17 million kilometers) of the surface of the sun on Nov. 28. Because of this extremely close approach, comet ISON holds the "potential" to flare into a dazzling object ? possibly becoming bright enough to be briefly glimpsed in broad daylight.?
Still, at this early stage in the comet's development, we can't be sure if this will actually happen.
A Swift look
Although still quite far from the sun and very faint, the comet has been imaged by two orbiting observatories. Astronomers from the University of Maryland at College Park and Lowell Observatory used NASA's Swift satellite to check out the comet during January and February. Using images acquired from Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope, the team was able to make initial estimates of the comet's water and dust production and then used these values to determine the size of ISON's icy nucleus.
?These observations revealed that each minute ISON was shedding about 56 tons (51,000 kg) of dust, or about two-thirds the mass of an unfueled space shuttle. Jets powered by sublimating ice also release dust, which reflects sunlight and brightens the comet.
By contrast, however, the comet was producing only about 130 pounds (60 kg) of water every minute, or about four times the amount flowing out of a residential sprinkler system. At the time, however, the comet was nearly half a billion miles from the sun. Typically, a comet's water content remains frozen until it comes within about three times Earth's distance to the sun ? about 280 million miles (450 million km) away. ISON won't be this close to the sun until early July at which time the water production rate should markedly increase.
The water and dust production rates from Swift were used to estimate the size of ISON's icy body. Comparing the amount of gas needed for a normal comet to blow off dust at the rate observed for ISON, the scientists estimate that the nucleus is roughly 3 miles (5 km) across, a typical size for a comet. This assumes that only the fraction of the surface most directly exposed to the sun, about 10 percent of the total, is actively producing jets.
Hubble's turn
More recently, Planetary Science Institute research scientist Jian-Yang Li led a team that imaged comet ISON with the Hubble Space Telescope on April 10 using the Wide Field Camera 3. At this point, the comet was slightly closer than Jupiter at 386 million miles (621 million kilometers) from the sun and 394 million miles (634 million kilometers) from Earth.

New grass hybrid could help reduce the likelihood of flooding
Apr. 25, 2013 ? A collaboration of plant and soil scientists from across the UK has shown a grass hybrid species could help reduce the impact of flooding.
The BBSRC-funded scientists, from Rothamsted Research, the James Hutton Institute, Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) at Aberystwyth University, Lancaster University and the University of Nottingham, used a hybridised species of grass called perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) with a closely related species called meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis).
They hoped to integrate the rapid establishment and growth rate of the ryegrass with the large, well developed root systems and efficient water capture of the meadow fescue.
Over two years of field experiments in the south west the team demonstrated that the hybrid, named Festulolium, reduced water runoff from agricultural grassland by up to 51 per cent compared to a leading UK nationally-recommended perennial ryegrass cultivar and by 43 per cent compared to meadow fescue.
It is thought the reduced runoff is achieved because Festulolium's intense initial root growth and subsequent rapid turn-over, especially at depth, allows more water to be retained within the soil.
The hybrid grass also provides high quality forage with resilience to weather extremes, making the grass doubly useful to farmers.
Dr. Kit Macleod, catchment scientist at the James Hutton Institute and one of the authors of the paper, said: "Hybrid grasses of this type show potential for reducing the likelihood of flood generation, whilst providing pasture for food production under conditions of changing climate.
"In areas with similar climate and soils, then there is potential for reducing the likelihood of flood generation based on increased soil water storage within a river's catchment."
Professor Douglas Kell, Chief Executive of BBSRC, said: "We usually think of improving food crops solely in terms of traits such as the yield and quality of the food itself, and apart from root crops such as potatoes and carrots these are easily visible, above-ground traits. However, there is increasing recognition that the health and utility of plants can be greatly enhanced by improving below-ground traits such as root growth.
"This is a superb example of that reasoning, and a hugely important advance resulting from decades of fundamental BBSRC-supported work on the hybridisation of Lolium and Festuca (Fescue) species. I am sure that we shall see a continuing resurgence of interest in root biology, which findings such as this are sure to promote. The enormous savings that will be possible by mitigating flooding through planting grasses such as these dwarf any possible cost of producing them."

Germany raises 2013 growth forecast to 0.5 percent: Economy ministry
BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany will grow by a meager 0.5 percent this year, the government said on Thursday, raising its forecast by just 0.1 percentage points as a lack of investment and weak exports continue to be a drag on Europe's largest economy.
The German Economy Ministry kept its 2014 forecast for solid growth of 1.6 percent and said it was upbeat as the global economy begins to regain traction and crisis-stricken euro zone states make progress with their reforms.
"There is every reason to look to the future with optimism. The German economy is picking up again and is successfully leaving an economic weak phase behind it," German Economy Minister Philipp Roesler said in a statement.
Europe's economic powerhouse lost momentum in late 2012 after putting in a strong performance during the first two years of the euro zone crisis. Growth slowed to 0.7 percent last year and the economy contracted by 0.6 percent in the fourth quarter as firms postponed investments and foreign trade weakened.
Economists polled by Reuters expect the German economy to avoid recession by growing around 0.3 percent in the first quarter, though a drop in business sentiment and a decline in private sector activity suggest it may be heading for another contraction in the second quarter.
The ministry said firms would spend 2.2 percent less in equipment this year than in 2012, revising down a January forecast for 1.3 percent less investment due to a sharp fall last year.
But it said investment activity was emerging from a trough, with a backlog easing, and would increase by some 3 percent on the year in the fourth quarter.
German growth will be driven by domestic demand this year and next, the ministry said, as shoppers benefit from a stable labor market and disposable income is expected to rise by 2.3 percent in 2013 and by 2.8 percent next year.
The ministry said Germany's unemployment rate would hold steady at a 20-year low of 6.8 percent this year before falling to 6.6 percent in 2014.
It said exports, which have traditionally been the driver of German economic growth, would rise by a muted 1.6 percent this year before surging by 5.0 percent in 2014.
Weakness in the euro zone, where Germany ships some 40 percent of its goods, and China, which had proved a strong alternative market until recently, have weighed on the German economy.
The finance ministry said earlier this week that the German economy had stabilized in the first quarter, though industry remained in a lull and private consumption had not picked up.

A new study suggests belief in God may significantly improve the outcome of those receiving short-term treatment for psychiatric illness.
Researchers followed patients receiving care from a hospital-based behavioral health program to investigate the relationship between patients? level of belief in God, expectations for treatment and actual treatment outcomes.
In the study, published in the current issue of Journal of Affective Disorders, researchers comment that people with a moderate to high level of belief in a higher power do significantly better in short-term psychiatric treatment than those without.
?Belief was associated with not only improved psychological well-being, but decreases in depression and intention to self-harm,? says David H. Rosmarin, Ph.D., an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
The study looked at 159 patients, recruited over a one-year period. Each participant was asked to gauge their belief in God as well as their expectations for treatment outcome and emotion regulation, each on a five-point scale.
Levels of depression, well-being, and self-harm were assessed at the beginning and end of their treatment program.
Of the patients sampled, more than 30 percent claimed no specific religious affiliation yet still saw the same benefits in treatment if their belief in a higher power was rated as moderately or very high.
Patients with ?no? or only ?slight? belief in God were twice as likely not to respond to treatment as patients with higher levels of belief.
Investigators believe the study demonstrates that a belief in God is associated with improved treatment outcomes in psychiatric care.
?More centrally, our results suggest that belief in the credibility of psychiatric treatment and increased expectations to gain from treatment might be mechanisms by which belief in God can impact treatment outcomes.?
Investigators hope that the study will lead to additional investigation on the clinical implication of spirtual life as more than 90 percent of the U.S. population hold religious beliefs.

Politics on hold at the dedication of Bush library
DALLAS (AP) ? George W. Bush shed a sentimental tear. Barack Obama mused about the burdens of the office. Bill Clinton dished out wisecracks. Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush chimed in, too, on a rare day of harmony at the dedication of the younger Bush's presidential library that glossed over the hard edges and partisan divides of five presidencies spanning more than three tumultuous decades.
"To know the man is to like the man," Obama declared of his Republican predecessor, speaking Thursday before a crowd of 10,000 at an event that had the feel of a class reunion for the partisans who had powered the Bush administration from 2001 to 2009. Dick Cheney was there in a white cowboy hat. Condoleezza Rice gave shout-outs to visiting dignitaries. Colin Powell and Karl Rove were prominent faces in the crowd.
On this day, there was no mention of Iraq or Afghanistan, the wars that dominated Bush's presidency and so divided the nation. There were only gentle references to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. And praise aplenty for the resolve that Bush showed in responding to the 9/11 terror attacks.
Clinton joked that the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Center was "the latest, grandest example of the eternal struggle of former presidents to rewrite history." But he also praised Bush for including interactive exhibits at the center that invite visitors to make their own choices on major decisions that he faced.
Bush, 66, made indirect reference to the polarizing decision points of his presidency, drawing a knowing laugh as he told the crowd: "One of the benefits of freedom is that people can disagree. It's fair to say I created plenty of opportunities to exercise that right."
He said he was guided throughout his presidency by a determination "to expand the reach of freedom."
"It wasn't always easy, and it certainly wasn't always popular."
It was a day for family and sentimentality, Bush choking up with emotion at the conclusion of his remarks.
The 43rd president singled out his 88-year-old father, another ex-president, to tell him: "41, it is awesome that you are here today."
The elder Bush, wearing jaunty pink socks, spoke for less than a minute from his wheelchair, then turned to his son and quipped, "Too long?" He has a form of Parkinson's disease and has been hospitalized recently for bronchitis.
Just as the public tends to view presidents more kindly once they've left office, ex-presidents, too, tend to soften their judgments ? or at least their public comments ? with time.
Obama once excoriated Bush for his "failed policies" and "disastrous" handling of the economy, for expanding budget deficits, and for drawing the nation into war in Iraq.
On Thursday, he took a detour around those matters and instead praised Bush for his strength after 9/11, compassion in fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa, bipartisanship in pursuing education reforms and restarting "an important conversation by speaking with the American people about our history as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants."
If the country is eventually able to enact immigration changes this year, Obama added, "it will be, in large part, thanks to the hard work of President George W. Bush."
Obama said the living presidents make up an exclusive club ? but it's more like a support group for the men who have held the position.
"No matter how much you may think you are ready to assume the office of the presidency, it's impossible to truly understand the nature of the job until it's yours," Obama said. "And that's why every president gains a greater appreciation for all of those who served before them."
The other presidents struck a similar tone.
Clinton praised Bush for his efforts to combat AIDS in Africa, his work on global health and even for the paintings he's doing in retirement. And he said he'd gotten so close to the Bush family that there were jokes that "I had become the black sheep son."
Carter praised Bush for his role in helping secure peace between North and South Sudan in 2005 and the "great contributions you've made to the most needy people on earth."
Bush has kept a decidedly low profile since leaving office four years ago with an approval rating of just 33 percent. That figure has been gradually climbing and now is at 47 percent ? about equal to Obama's own approval rating, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released ahead of the library opening.
If politics was absent from the podium on Thursday, it was still a prominent subtext.
Those in attendance included a number of potential candidates for president in 2016 ? another Clinton (Hillary) and Bush (Jeb) among them.
George W. Bush in recent days played up the idea of his younger brother, the former governor of Florida, seeking the White House, telling C-SPAN, "My first advice is: Run."
Their mother, former first lady Barbara Bush, did the opposite.
"We've had enough Bushes," she said Thursday on NBC's "Today" show.
The presidential center at Southern Methodist University includes a library, museum and policy institute. It contains more than 70 million pages of paper records, 200 million emails, 4 million digital photos and 43,000 artifacts. Bush's library will feature the largest digital holdings of any of the 13 presidential libraries under the auspices of the National Archives and Records Administration.

A Playbook for Undoing the Sequester
Who would have guessed that the air-traffic controllers and meat inspectors would be the first ones lucky enough to avoid the across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration?
So it went on Friday, when Congress passed legislation to give the Federal Aviation Administration special flexibility in implementing its sequester cuts. The bill exempted air-traffic controllers from furloughs, which had caused flight delays at major airport hubs throughout the Northeast for the past five days. Meat inspectors also received a carve-out in late March following a powerful lobbying push and under the guise of ensuring food safety.
Now, with two sequester tweaks on the books, other special-interest groups, unions, and lobbyists are planning to rev up their efforts to undo the cuts bit by bit or, in this case, by a few billion dollars here or there. The actions of the FAA over the past week, alongside airline groups and unions, offer a playbook for others to use as they too seek exemptions.
?What you?re seeing now is an unraveling of the sequester. This is predictable as the sun rising in the east, and it will happen piece by piece over the next 60 to 90 days,? says Steve Bell, senior director of economic policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center and a former staff director for the Senate Budget Committee.
Already, interest groups are plotting new ways to cast their particular sequester cuts as dire or unfair or safety hazards since they see an opening to escape the full force of the legislation. Remember the hollering a few weeks ago about cancer patients being turned away from treatment or clinical trials? Well, the American Cancer Society Action Network plans to ramp up its pressure on lawmakers following the FAA legislation. The group has an energized grassroots organization; a lobbying team in Washington; and lots of face time with lawmakers. After all, if air-traffic controllers can get a pass, then the cancer advocacy group thinks patients should too.
?We?re no longer just talking about why we need this additional funding. We?re talking about people who are dying because of what politicians are unable to do,? says Christopher Hansen, president of the American Cancer Society Action Network, the advocacy arm of the American Cancer Society. The message, he adds, ?is going to get more edgy.?
It took a mere six days for the FAA to push Congress to change its language on the agency?s sequester cuts. The furloughs of air-traffic controllers began April 21. Each ensuing day, the agency released a press release and tweeted about the number of flights delayed due to sequestration and the resulting reduced staffing at airports.
On Wednesday alone, 863 flights were delayed at major hubs in New York, Washington, Cleveland, Dallas, and Jacksonville, Fla. On average, New Yorkers? flights were delayed by one hour, while delays at the Los Angeles airport spanned into two hours, says Mark Duell, vice president of operations at FlightAware.com, an industry tracking group. The airlines also threatened to undo their rule to not keep passengers waiting on the tarmac for more than three hours.
Forget that an additional 2,132 flights were delayed on Wednesday, due to weather or other typical airline mishaps. This week, for instance, New York suffered from high winds, and Florida experienced thunderstorms, Duell says.
When the flights were delayed, the message from the airlines was clear: This is all the fault of the sequester. Pilots and flight attendants in their announcements attributed problems to the government cuts, says airline industry analysts. This riled up consumers and made them aware of the sequester cuts in a way they may not have experienced them before. (In mid-March, a majority of Americans had yet to see evidence of the sequester in their lives, says Gallup pollsters).
Then came the lobbying muscle to fight the FAA cuts. That?s the thing about the airline industry?it has lots of manpower. The airline pilots have a union, as do the air-traffic controllers. Major airlines have an industry group alongside the regional airlines. Even companies involved in shipping, transportation, air express, and postal delivery got involved.
It was all-out blitz, from the cable-news shots of angry passengers delayed at major airports and missing connecting flights to websites set up by the industry to decry the issue. ?Don?t Ground America? was the slogan of one industry advocacy site. ?The FAA?s unnecessary and reckless action will disrupt air travel for millions of Americans, cost jobs, and threatens to ground the U.S. economy to halt,? says the site.
This combination of angry consumers and a powerful industry?combined with a lack of opposition?forced Congress to vote to give the FAA more room to maneuver with its sequester cuts. In the weeks to come, the question is: Will this prove as a successful template for other industries or a one-off lucky break for the FAA on the sequester?
The Internal Revenue Service recently announced its plans to furlough its employees. The group representing them, the National Treasury Employees Union, wants those furloughs scaled back. ?Congress just voted to make it more likely that their flights home for another vacation today will not be delayed, but they should be staying here to find a way to stop the sequester and prevent the loss of services the American people rely on,? said NTEU President Colleen Kelley in a statement.?
In the coming weeks, the cuts least likely to receive much attention are those that affect the poor or the unemployed. Already, workers who?ve been out of job for six months or more have seen ?federal unemployment checks cut by about 11 percent cuts due to the sequester.
?It pains and saddens me that there is no outcry to undo the sequester cuts for them,? says Judy Conti, a federal advocacy coordinator with the National Employment Law Project. ?The political reality is that members of the House are not willing to do that.?

P&G, AT&T drop after earnings, holding back Dow
NEW YORK (AP) ? Weak earnings forecasts from Procter & Gamble and AT&T held the Dow Jones industrial average back on Wednesday.
P&G, the world's largest consumer goods maker, fell 4.8 percent to $78.03 after the maker of Tide detergent and Gillette razors said its revenue fell short of the expectations of Wall Street analysts. The company also issued a weak profit forecast for the next quarter. AT&T dropped 5.9 percent to $36.70 after it lost phone subscribers from its contract-based plans for the first time as sales of smartphones slow.
Those declines were enough to keep the 30-member Dow in the red, despite more stocks rising than falling in the index. The Dow was down 24 points by noon Eastern time.
In the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index, the earnings news was mixed.
Yum Brands, which owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, was among the gainers, advancing 7 percent to $68.70. Yum reported earnings late Tuesday that exceeded the expectations of financial analysts. General Dynamic, the aerospace and defense company, also surged after posting a profit that was better than expected. The stock jumped 5.3 percent to $70.66.
Other companies, including home appliance maker Whirlpool and drug maker Eli Lilly, disappointed investors.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.2 percent at 14,695 at midday. The S&P 500 index rose one point, or 0.1 percent, to 1,579. The Nasdaq composite was down six points, or 0.2 percent, at 3,264.
While the majority of companies have been exceeding Wall Street's expectations on earnings, their performance on sales hasn't been as strong, suggesting that they are struggling to grow.
About 67 percent of S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings so far have beaten expectations, better than the 10-year average of 62 percent, according to S&P Capital IQ. However, only 42 percent have beaten revenue forecasts.
Company earnings so far have been consistent with signs that the global economy is slowing, said Jim Russell, a regional investment director at U.S. Bank. Russell said it's too early to conclude whether the slowdown will be short-lived.
"We think that most managements are appropriately cautious in their outlooks, because it's very possible that the second-quarter will continue to slow," said Russell. "We're watching with cautious optimism that this is a second-quarter-only soft patch in the economic data."
A report Wednesday that orders for long-lasting U.S. factory goods fell more than economists expected last month added to the signs that global growth is cooling. The Commerce Department said orders for durable goods declined 5.7 percent in March following a 4.3 percent gain the previous month. February's figure was also revised lower.
Stocks logged their biggest weekly drop in five months last week after growth in China, the world's second-biggest economy, slowed. Weaker hiring and manufacturing growth in March have also weighed on the stock market this month.
The market's gains this month have been modest after a first-quarter surge that pushed both the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 to record highs. The Dow is up just 0.8 percent in April, the S&P 500 index 0.6 percent.
During the first three months of the year, the Dow and the S&P 500 averaged monthly gains of more than 3 percent, driven by optimism that the housing market was recovering and company earnings would continue to climb.
Among other companies that reported earnings, Boeing rose 3.6 percent to $91.27 after the airplane maker said its first-quarter net income rose 20 percent despite problems with the 787 Dreamliner. The company said it would still meet its financial and delivery targets this year even after the 787 was grounded in mid-January because of problems with its batteries.
Amgen plunged 6 percent to $105.80 after the biotech company's sales growth disappointed investors.
In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, was little changed at 1.71 percent.

Let's face it, any parental monitoring program that you could use to secretly track what your children are doing online could potentially be misused to snoop on your spouse, your boss, a business rival, or just about anyone. There's a bit less potential for abuse with GigaWatch, because you can only manage the monitored computer from another computer within the same local network. And, as the FAQ points out, spying on people without their knowledge is almost certainly illegal in your state.
At $44, GigaWatch is the least expensive tool of its sort that I've reviewed. Note, too, that this is a one-time fee, not a subscription. The company promises that "Over years we plan to implement new monitoring features into GigaWatch and you'll be able to receive all future updates free of charge." Getting free updates is especially good given the fact that this product needs a few tweaks.
Another similar product that sells for a one-time payment is Shield Genie, but at $149.95 it costs quite a bit more. If you want Spector Pro 2011, you'll pay $99.95 each year. The initial one-time purchase price for WebWatcher or PC Pandora 7.0 is higher than GigaWatch's price, and to get maximum performance from these two you'll pay for an ongoing subscription. GigaWatch is definitely a bargain compared with the competition.
Setting up GigaWatch
GigaWatch consists of a monitoring module and a separate administrative console. During installation you'll choose which of these to install. You can also install both on the same PC, in which case you'll want to choose stealth mode, so the administrative console doesn't give itself away. (The monitoring module is always in stealth mode.)
It's probably stealthier to install the administrative console on a different computer than the one being monitored. Note that both have to be within the same local network. After installing the administrative console, you simply probe the network to find PCs running the monitor. Yes, you can monitor multiple PCs, but you'll need a license for each.
Spector Pro also requires that the administrative console reside within the same network as the monitored computer. Shield Genie goes even further, requiring that you do all your configuration and management at the computer that's being watched. By contrast, WebWatcher lets you connect from anywhere at all; PC Pandora, too, if you pay $29.97 per month for the "Live" module.
During the installation process you'll create two passwords, one for access to the administrative console and one to let the administrative console access data on the monitored computer. Why two passwords? Well, picture a business using GigaWatch to track employees (with their knowledge, of course). Without that machine-specific password, someone else on your network could install another copy of the administrative console, probe the network with it, and hijack your monitoring sessions.
Communicating With the Monitor
From the main Configuration Manager window, you can enable or disable the nine monitoring modules. By default, all are enabled. You can also dig in and configure the settings for each monitor. When you've finished, clicking "Save & Send" both saves your changes and transmits them to the monitored computer. You can also save your changes and send later, if necessary.
Each time you open the administrative console, you must select which computer you want to view and click a button to sync in the latest data from that computer. Note that you still have to do this even if the administrative console is installed on the same computer.
Successful Stealth
In stealth mode, GigaWatch leaves no trace. There are no visible icons or menu items, and it doesn't show up in Task Manager or in the list of Startup programs. You activate the console by pressing a special key combination and entering your master password when prompted. Spector Pro, PC Pandora, and WebWatcher are likewise stealthy, and they go a bit further. On the chance that the child might accidentally hit on the special key combo, they use an anonymous, unlabeled dialog box to ask for the password. GigaWatch's name is plastered all over its popup password dialog; I'd be happier if it, too, used an anonymous login dialog.

China's ZTE signs Android patent license with Microsoft
SEATTLE (Reuters) - China's ZTE Corp, one of the world's largest smartphone makers, has agreed to pay Microsoft Corp a royalty for devices it makes using Google Inc's Android and Chrome operating systems.
ZTE is the latest in a line of hardware manufacturers that have struck a patent deal with Microsoft, which has successfully argued that Android - which Google provides free to handset makers - uses Microsoft-owned technology.
Google itself, and its Motorola phone maker unit, are the most notable holdouts against a patent agreement with Microsoft. Those differences could be settled soon, depending on the judge's verdict in a patent trial in Seattle.
Reaching agreement with ZTE means Microsoft now has patent deals in place with four of the five leading Android phone makers.
It already has agreements with South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Corp, and with Taiwan's HTC Corp.
It has no deal with China's fast-growing Huawei Technologies Co Ltd.
The ZTE deal marks progress for Microsoft with companies operating in China, following last week's patent agreement with contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, parent of Foxconn.
Microsoft said it now has Android patent deals with about 20 device makers, and 60 percent of Android phones sold worldwide are covered by a Microsoft patent license.

ANN ARBORLong-term exposure to air pollution may be linked to heart attacks and strokes by speeding up atherosclerosis, or "hardening of the arteries," according to a University of Michigan public health researcher and colleagues from across the U.S.
Sara Adar, the John Searle Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the U-M School of Public Health, and Joel Kaufman, professor of environmental and occupational health sciences and medicine at the University of Washington, led the study that found that higher concentrations of fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) were linked to a faster thickening of the inner two layers of the common carotid arteryan important blood vessel that provides blood to the head, neck and brain.
Conversely, they found that reductions of fine particulate air pollution over time were linked to slower progression of the blood vessel thickness.
Their research is published in this week's PLOS Medicine.
The thickness of this blood vessel is an indicator of how much atherosclerosis is present in the arteries throughout the body, even among people with no obvious symptoms of heart disease.
"Our findings help us to understand how it is that exposures to air pollution may cause the increases in heart attacks and strokes observed by other studies," Adar said.
The researchers followed 5,362 people ages 45-84 from six U.S. metropolitan areas as part of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air). The researchers were able to link air pollution levels estimated at each person's house with two ultrasound measurements of the blood vessels, separated by about three years.
After adjusting for other factors such as smoking, the authors found that on average, the thickness of the carotid vessel increased by 14 micrometers each year. The vessels of people exposed to higher levels of residential fine particulate air pollution, however, thickened faster than others living in the same metropolitan area.
"Linking these findings with other results from the same population suggests that persons living in a more polluted part of town may have a 2 percent higher risk of stroke as compared to people in a less polluted part of the same metropolitan area," Adar said.
"If confirmed by future analyses of the full 10 years of follow-up in this cohort, these findings will help to explain associations between long-term PM2.5 concentrations and clinical cardiovascular events."

Three under investigation over topless Kate photos: source
PARIS (Reuters) - The publisher of a French celebrity magazine was placed under formal investigation for breach of privacy over the publication of topless pictures of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, a judicial source said on Wednesday.
The photographer who snapped the pictures of the Duchess, or Kate Middleton, in the summer last year and a regional daily were also put under investigation, the last step in France before being charged, the source said.
Closer magazine, a weekly round-up of celebrity gossip, published in September a series of photos of the Duchess, the wife of Prince William, topless on holidays in southern France, something that incensed much of the British public.
The photos showed Kate slipping off her bikini top, relaxing on a sun lounger and at one point pulling down the back of her bikini bottoms. Buckingham Palace had called the photo spread a "grotesque" invasion of the royal couple's privacy.
The publisher of the magazine - the French branch of Italy's Mondadori - and the paparazzi who snapped the photos from a distance were put under formal investigation earlier this month, the judicial source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Mondadori in a statement said the company "was not aware of any new developments in addition to what is already known on this matter".
The regional daily La Provence, which published pictures of Prince William and his wife in swimming suits during the same holiday, was put under formal investigation this week, the source said.
An investigation does not necessarily lead to formal charges.
The office of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge could not be reached for comment.

Nintendo won't host a keynote at E3 2013, plans small but focused hands-on events instead
A lot of folks have been wondering just how Nintendo's keynote was going to outshine the launch of two competitor consoles at this year's E3. Turns out, it won't. During Nintendo's Japanese financial results briefing, company President Satoru Iwata revealed the company wouldn't be hosting a Keynote at E3 this year. "We decided not to host a large-scale presentation targeted at everyone in the international audience where we announce new information as we did in the past," Iwata explained. "Instead, at the E3 show this year, we are planning to host a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the US market." Nintendo will be hosting two events, actually -- one for distributors and another for the media. The company president says he won't personally be speaking at either event.
In lieu of the traditional keynote livestream, Nintendo will be releasing Nintendo Direct streams to deliver region specific news to Japanese and overseas fans. It's a bold, and perhaps dangerous move for the Japanese gaming giant. While bowing out of the keynote avoids the yearly squabble over who "won" E3 in the eyes of critics, it also forfeits the opportunities a large presentation provides, namely promotion. Excitable fans may have to wait until Nintendo Spaceworld to get their hype-fix.

Jon Stewart Drubs CNN Again For Boston Bombing Reporting (VIDEO)
You might think Jon Stewart is being overly harsh in taking CNN to task yet again for its Boston bombing coverage... until you see this set of clips from the dramatic conclusion to last week's nightmare manhunt.
To sum it up here would be a disservice to the segment. Suffice to say, CNN went from a "say it first and have Anderson Cooper correct it later" style to a "sandlot football, 'EVERYONE GO LONG'" model. Much, much better.
Or not better at all.

Then frequently the ?look? was followed by ?but you?re not old enough to have arthritis?.? Sorry to break the news to you but yes even children develop arthritis.? In fact, the CDC estimates that in the US there are approximately 294,000 children under 18 years of age have some type of arthritis or rheumatic disorder.? Of those at least 30,000 have been diagnosed with juvenile RA or JRA.
Though most of us ?older? people know the condition to be called JRA the name was recently changed to?Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.? The reason for the name change was to emphasize that there is a difference between JRA and adult RA.? Name change or not it is the most common form of juvenile arthritis.? Though they are different they also have similarities for example girls develop JRA more frequently than boys just as women are more often affected by RA than men.? Other similarities include the possibility of joint damage as well as it may also have genetic related causes and there may also be an environmental trigger.? Children with JRA are treated with the same types of medications that are used to treat adult RA including NSAID?s, DMARD?s, as well as biologics.? Some of the main differences are that JRA is much less common than adult RA.? Another significant difference is that children frequently outgrow their JRA where as adults do not.? JRA can also affect the bone growth in children as well.? Though adults don?t always have a positive RA factor, children are even less likely to have one.? The other significant difference is that JRA/JIA is not considered to be a single disorder but a condition that encompasses many? conditions.? These conditions not only affect different areas of the body but they progress differently and frequently require different treatments.? Some symptoms may only last for a short period while others can last for years.
JIA also more accurately describes the condition as ?idiopathic? which means no known cause.? Just as with adult RA researchers do not know what causes JIA/JRA.
JRA has been classified into five main types;
1. Systemic JRA is they type also know as stills disease, can also affect the organs and tends to have early symptoms of fever and rash.
2. Polyarticular JRA is the type considered to be the closest to adult RA. In this type there are five or more joints affected in the first 6 months.
3. Oligoarthritis is the most common form of JRA affecting approximately half of all children with RA as well as being the type with the mildest symptoms of all the types of JRA.
4. Psoriatic RA which is similar to adult psoriatic arthritis.
5. Enthesitis related arthritis or ERA generally affects the hips and spine.? This type is more common in boys than girls and affects the insertion points of muscles, ligaments, and tendon?s.
Treatment for JRA centers on improving and maintaining your child?s level of functioning both physically and socially as well as to prevent complications, in particular eye and growth problems.? There are several options available to your Dr that can assist with that goal.? The most common medications being used today are the NSAID?s, DMARD?s, and biologics as well as immunosuppressants and corticosteroids.? Many Dr?s also recommend that children work with a physical therapist to maintain joint range of motion and flexibility.
There are numerous studies and clinical trials taking place in search of newer and more effective treatments of RA that give new hope to both children and adults with RA.
New Treatments
There are currently over one and a half million Americans suffering with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).? The cost of treating RA including both direct and indirect costs are in excess of $80 billion annually.? Personally, I was stunned by the cost of the new medications on the market.? When Enbrel first came out back in 2001 I couldn?t even get on the waiting list until I had prescription insurance, that was before Medicare had prescription insurance, so I asked about the cost and almost fell down. For one month, which is 8 injections, it was almost $1,500.? Though I don?t know the current costs of Enbrel or other ?biologics? like Humera or the newest one to be approved by the FDA, Xeljanz, I?m sure they?re still expensive.?
Although the incidence of RA in men has been declining in recent years, the incidence in women has increased by two and a half percent per year. People with RA also have as much as a 70% higher mortality rate than the general population. One of the major concerns is that RA usually strikes young adults in their 20?s and 30?s.? These are very productive years for young adults.? they are generally starting careers and families. ?At least half of those diagnosed with RA will be disabled and unable to work with in 10years of diagnosis, some much sooner than that, which adds to the annual cost of treating this chronic disease.
Fortunately, there have been significant advances in treatments for RA in the last decade, most notably with drugs called ?biologics.? ?Biologics are proteins copied from human genes that have been genetically manipulated to suppress specific elements of the immune system. The elements they target are the principle cause of inflammation, which is the chief characteristic of RA. However, some of the major problems with these medications are not only are they expensive most can only be administered by subcutaneous injection or intravenous infusion. The only exception is the newest addition to the group which is Xeljanz.? Xeljanz is a pill that is taken orally twice a day.
Now, British researchers have created what many with ra are calling real hope for a ?cure.? This new and significant medication is a single infusion of BiP, otherwise known as?binding immunoglobulin protein. The British researchers have started an in-human trial of this new medication that will run for 2 years.? So what is BiP?? It is a protein that previously has demonstrated strong anti inflammatory properties in collagen-induced arthritis. BiP is a natural anti-inflammatory protein. People with RA do not have adequate amounts of this natural protein. Therefore researchers believe that by giving a single dose of BiP intravenously will reset the immune system of a person with RA which can potential put that person into remission for months, maybe even years. In addition to showing great promise for those of us suffering with RA it has also shown great promise in treating brittle bone disease.
The impact of this new treatment is significant in many ways, not only in reducing the pain and inflammation of RA, but it also will extend those productive years that young adults lose due to the effects of RA as well as significantly decreasing chronic medical care costs.? And that?s just for people with RA, there are numerous possibilities in the future for this new type of treatment.
