Photo Story: Liberia | Peter Gostelow - Adventure Cycling ...

The Rain International Service Station of Liberia had a single fuel pump, which by the looks of it wasn?t working. What fuel was available was contained in a demijohn resting on top of the pump. There might have been more stored in a jerry can within one of the rooms behind, but I didn?t ask the attendant. I don?t think he was very busy by the looks of it.

The price of fuel in Africa varies depending on how far it has had to travel from a refinery. The Rain International Service Station is about 50km north of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, where I arrived later that day. The previous day I crossed the border from Sierra Leone, which like Liberia has had an equally troubled past. Fortunately both countries are slowly rebuilding themselves, but there aren?t many tourists visiting yet.

For me service stations in Africa provided more of an opportunity to fill up with water or stop for a coke. The Rain International Service Station had neither. I did use petrol for my camping stove, but half a litre might last 1-2 weeks, sometimes longer when I wasn?t cooking.

It was a suitably named service station for the time of year I was here ? August. Monrovia records one of the highest annual rainfalls of any city in the world. I got quite wet during my month cycling here. You can read the blog post that this photo originally appeared in here

Car bomb kills 6 south of Iraqi capital

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Police and health officials say a car bomb in Iraq's heartland Shiite province south of Baghdad has killed at least 6 people and wounded 20.

A police officer says the parked car bomb targeted one of the gates to the city of Karbala, killing 6 civilians. He says several policemen are among the 20 wounded in the mid-morning attack. The blast damaged a number of nearby buildings and cars.

A health official in a local hospital confirmed the causality figure. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Karbala is 90 kilometers, or 55 miles, south of Baghdad. It's one of the holiest cities in Shiite Islam and the place where the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussein, is buried.

PFT: Problem with NFL's year-round Adderall ban

John HarbaughAP

The Ravens are 9-2, but it hasn?t been an easy season.? Apart from key injuries and periodic ineffectiveness and a defense that ain?t what it used to be, coach John Harbaugh had to deal with an unexpected uprising last month.

The moment came, according to Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports, on Halloween morning.? Back from a bye-week break after a backbreaking loss to the Texans, Harbaugh told the team that they?d be practicing in full pads.? Several veteran players openly challenged their head coach.

?It was practically a mutiny,? a Ravens player told Silver.? ?It came very close to getting out of control. But the way Coach Harbaugh handled it was amazing.? He let people have their say, and he listened, and he explained himself, and pretty soon it was like a big group-therapy session.? In the end, a lot of positive things were said.? We didn?t practice in pads, but we came out of there stronger as a group.?

Coincidentally (or not), the Ravens haven?t lost since then.

?I?ve never seen a head coach handle anything like that as well as he did,? a Ravens assistant who attended the meeting told Silver.? ?There were some things said where we were like, Damn.

?A lot of coaches would have acted like dictators and been very sensitive about the way their authority was being questioned.? John said, ?Hey, let?s talk about this.?? He showed great leadership.? Instead of worrying that it would make him seem weak, he turned it into a strength.?

Harbaugh realizes the value of encouraging players to speak their mind.

?I wasn?t threatened by it,? Harbaugh said.? ?That?s the main thing.? And, you know, they had some good points, and I had some good points.? Other guys stood up and said some great things.? To me, it embodied everything that you should have on a team.

?The point was that, we have what I call ?Open Mic,? and we can all say anything that we need to say and have to say. You know then that you?re responsible ? when you say it, everybody?s gonna hear it, so you?d better make it your best stuff.

?That brings out the best.? Otherwise, it?s ?Why are they sneaking around talking behind corners??? You know what I mean?? If you?ve got something, you put it right out here in front of me.? I?m man enough to handle it.? If you?re right, then you?re right!? It?s OK to be right.? But more important it?s OK to be wrong.? And it?s OK for me to be wrong, too.?

By being willing to admit that he?s wrong and make changes, Harbaugh could be poised to take his team right to the Super Bowl.

In fact, the only thing Harbaugh may have done wrong in this episode is to let it be known what happened.? Now, other coaches facing similar challenges may opt not to be hardheaded, which could help their own teams play better, possibly when playing the Ravens.

Williams Automotive holds fundraiser for EAC | emporiagazette.com

Williams Automotive is having its sixth annual charity fundraiser for an area organization that helps children.

Rex and Debbie Williams, who own Williams Automotive, are offering tickets for three separate drawings to help the Emporia Arts Center.

Debbie Williams said they were looking around at what organization had the greatest need, and she and Rex knew the arts council had taken a substantial funding cut in recent years and thought it could use the money.

?It?s nice to be able to give back to Emporia, especially at the holidays,? she said. ?It?s just kind of a nice way that we can repay Emporia for helping us be successful.

?I think all the other sponsors feel the same way. ? Emporia is a great community and it has got so many great things going for it and it?s an example to us to how great it is when you see how generous people can be with our little charity that we try to do.?

Sutherlands Lumber Co. donated a $999-garden shed; Mark II Lumber donated a playhouse valued at $1,749; and Waters True Value donated about $600 in lawn equipment that includes a push lawn mower, a weed eater and a leaf blower; all for the drawings that will take place Jan. 15.

Rex Williams said people can purchase each ticket with a $5 donation.

The other sponsors are Bill Redeker Construction, Michael and Sheila Williams, Groh Printing Co., Printing Plus, KVOE, KISS 103.1 and The Emporia Gazette.

Bill Redeker, KISS 103.1 and Williams Automotive will provide a matching $500, Debbie Williams said. The goal is to raise at least $10,000 for the arts center.

The Emporia Arts Council lost $30,000 in state funding when the Kansas Arts Commission was dissolved in May 2011, Director Melissa Windsor said. The center does have an after-school program at the Emporia Middle School because it continued to receive grant funding. However, the center lost funding to provide after-school programs to the students at the area elementary schools.

?We think it is a really great opportunity to expose children to art,? Windsor said. ?A lot of children nowadays get very little art and have very little time for art in their classrooms at school. We love providing it to them free of charge and making it accessible for everyone. All the money that we receive from this fundraiser will benefit the children of Emporia and the surrounding area and go to children?s programming, whether it?s a gallery exhibit or the Artmobile out in the community or art classes.?

Williams Automotive will have the garden shed, playhouse and lawn equipment in the Christmas Parade tonight, Rex Williams said. It will also showcase the items at Sutherlands, Mark II, Waters True Value and the arts center before Jan. 15.

Debbie Williams said the previous five fundraisers have raised about $25,000 combined.

People can purchase the tickets at Bill Redeker Construction, the Emporia Arts Center, Groh Printing, Mark II Lumber, Pit Stop Fast Lube, Printing Plus, Sutherlands, Waters True Value and Williams Automotive.

If citizens or businesses want to be a sponsor or would like more information about the raffle, they can call Rex Williams at (620) 343-0086.

First gas tanker crosses Arctic

A large tanker carrying liquified natural gas (LNG) is set to become the first ship of its type to sail across the Arctic.

The carrier, Ob River, left Norway in November and has sailed north of Russia on its way to Japan.

The specially equipped tanker is due to arrive in early December and will shave 20 days off the regular journey.

The owners say that changing climate conditions and a volatile gas market make the Arctic transit profitable.

Long-term preparation

Built in 2007 with a strengthened hull, the Ob River can carry up to 150,000 cubic metres of gas. The tanker was loaded with LNG at Hammerfest in the north of Norway on 7 November and set sail across the Barents Sea. It has been accompanied by a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker for much of its voyage.

You are able to reach a highly profitable market by saving forty percent of the distance, that's forty percent less fuel used as well?

End Quote Tony Lauritzen Dynagas

The ship, with an international crew of 40, has been chartered from its Greek owners Dynagas by the Russian Gazprom energy giant. It says it has been preparing for the trip for over a year.

"It's an extraordinarily interesting adventure," Tony Lauritzen, commercial director at Dynagas, told BBC News.

"The people on board have been seeing polar bears on the route. We've had the plans for a long time and everything has gone well."

Mr Lauritzen says that a key factor in the decision to use the northern route was the recent scientific record on melting in the Arctic.

"We have studied lots of observation data - there is an observable trend that the ice conditions are becoming more and more favourable for transiting this route. You are able to reach a highly profitable market by saving 40% of the distance, that's 40% less fuel used as well."

But melting ice is not the only factor. A major element is the emergence of shale gas in the US.

The Norwegian LNG plant at Hammerfest was developed with exports to the US in mind. But the rapid uptake of shale in America has curbed the demand for imported gas.

Meanwhile in Japan, in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, there has been a growing interest in alternative power sources, especially gas.

"The major point about gas is that it now goes east and not west," says Gunnar Sander, senior adviser at the Norwegian Polar Institute and an expert on how climate change impacts economic activity in the Arctic.

"The shale gas revolution has turned the market upside down; that plus the rapid melting of the polar ice."

He stresses that the changes in climate are less important than the growing demand for oil and gas.

"The major driver is the export of resources from the Arctic region, not the fact that you can transit across the Arctic sea."

There is an expectation that because of changing climactic conditions, sea traffic across the northern sea route will increase rapidly. 2012 has been a record year both for the length of the sailing season and also for the amount of cargo that has been shipped.

But Gunnar Sander says there are limits to the growth and some perspective is required.

"Nineteen thousand ships went through the Suez canal last year; around 40 went through the northern sea route. There's a huge difference."

Bin Laden movie based on controversial first-hand accounts

It was the greatest manhunt of all time, the stealthy nighttime raid by the elite SEAL Team Six on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, which led to the death of the world's most wanted terrorist leader.

It is the subject of "Zero Dark Thirty," a riveting new film by director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, both of Oscar-winning "The Hurt Locker" fame. But when they began making a film about the hunt for bin Laden six years ago, right after they finished "The Hurt Locker," the movie they had in mind was about the failed attempt to find bin Laden in the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan.

That plan changed drastically on May 1, 2011 when bin Laden was killed. Boal, a meticulous investigative reporter, picked up the phone and started working his sources.

"It was a thrilling journey to go on and also thrilling to discover what the people who were involved in this mission were really like," Boal said.

In an exclusive interview with "Nightline," Bigelow and Boal talked about bringing "Zero Dark Thirty" to the screen based on Boal's interviews and Bigelow's dramatic vision.

"It was all based on first hands accounts so it really felt very vivid and very vital and very, very immediate and visceral of course which is very exciting as a film maker," Bigelow said.

Watch ABC's Martha Raddatz's exclusive interview with Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal on "Nightline" tonight at 11:35 p.m. ET

Bigelow said she and Boal were working in his office when they heard President Obama's now famous announcement that the United States had "conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden."

"It was a personal moment for me because I grew up in New York City," Boal said. "I think for a lot of people, just kind of an overwhelming moment."

All of a sudden, Bigelow said it put their project in a very different perspective.

"It was not just as a film concern, it was kind of a global concern," she said. "We both realized simultaneously that we had to pivot."

"I picked up the phone and started calling sources and asking them what they knew and taking referrals and knocking on doors and really approached it as comprehensively as I could," Boal said.

Almost immediately, the filmmakers found themselves in the middle of an election year firestorm, accused of receiving classified documents to bolster the president's role. It's something they both deny.

"I certainly did a lot of homework, but I never asked for classified material," Boal said. "To my knowledge I never received any."

In fact, President Obama makes only a fleeting appearance in the film. The star of this real-life drama is, surprisingly, a young female CIA officer, played by Jessica Chastain, who helps find bin Laden through a long-forgotten courier.

"It was a couple of months into the research when I heard about a woman, part of the team, and she has played a big role and she had gone to Jalalabad and been deployed with the SEALs on the night of the raid," Boal said.

"When I realized at the heart of this hunt, at the heart of this 10-year odyssey was this woman, this young woman who had a kind of tenacity and a dedication and a courage, she would never say no, I was excited to take it on," Bigelow said.

The Story Behind "Zero Dark Thirty"

Both Bigelow and Boal felt a responsibility to accurately portray the lives of the people who normally work in the shadows, their efforts rarely known to the outside world. While some of the dialog is word for word real, based on interviews with the young CIA officer and others, some of the dialog is dramatized and the decade-long narrative of events condensed.

"They were proud of what they had done, but they had more or less resigned themselves to the fact that what they had done is not something they could talk about publically," Boal said. "But one of the things a movie allows people to do is talk in a way that is a little bit freer because they know that movies can change the way people look, [and] that I don't have quite the same standards of having to reveal sources as I would if I was, let's say, running a front page piece in the New York Times."

The climax of the film is, of course, the raid that killed bin Laden. The scene was a challenge for the filmmakers who were presenting it to a world that knew how it ended.

"But they don't know how it happened," Bigelow said. "They don't know, OK what was the choreography of the assault itself, where did they land, where did they crash, who did they kill first?"

Although it only takes up about one-fifth of "Zero Dark Thirty" -- the title comes from the code for SEAL team's landing time of 12:30 a.m. -- the filmmakers said the assault on bin Laden's compound, like the rest of the film, is as accurate as possible. A full scale version of the compound -- no Hollywood facades for this movie ? was built in Jordan, where they shot for almost four weeks. The floor, the tile, the carpet, the furniture and the marks on the walls, were copied from images seen in ABC News footage that Bigelow said they reviewed frame by frame.

And the famous stealth helicopters that swept over the border into Pakistan were real Black Hawks with computer generated graphics replicating the stealthy skin. Bigelow said the actors told of the terrifying and challenging conditions their real-life counterparts faced.

"You are in the elements, you are in the wind, you are in the sand, the sound of the rotor wash and you can't see anything. So you imagine what it would be like to land in this place," she said.

And Bigelow takes viewers beyond the clinical news accounts, the soundless descriptions and even though you might think you know how it ends, there is more to the story.

"For both of us I think it's fair to say the story itself and the making of it was really hard but really thrilling and exciting," Boal said. "Because you are at the center of something that is so epic and that doesn't come along very often and I think we were both aware of the fact that we probably won't have another story like this."

"I can't imagine," Bigelow said. "I think it's the story of a lifetime."

Leonid meteor shower late tonight: Stay up, bundle up, look up

The Leonid meteor shower peaks tonight in the first of what may be two viewing climaxes this year. The sky at 3 a.m. Eastern time will be moonless, as long as you can see it. Face east.

Or, more precisely, the peak of this well-known meteor shower is coming. The annual event is predicted to climax around 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time Saturday. But at least one forecaster, Russian astronomer Mikhail Maslovof, is predicting a second peak at around 1 a.m. Eastern time on Nov. 20.

Weather permitting, viewing conditions should be good, since the moon will have long-since set. Which is too bad, in a way, because it's presenting only a thin sliver of itself, making it possible to see the Earth's glow faintly reflecting back from the dark portion of the lunar surface.

The meteor shower gets its name from the constellation Leo ? the apparent region of origin for the display. But the tiny bits of space debris that are heated to incandescence as they enter Earth's atmosphere actually come from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, a clump of rubble and ice about a mile across that orbits the sun every 33 years.

The comet last made its closest approach to the sun, when it sheds dust and gas most profusely, in 1998. This led to some spectacular showers between 1999 and 2002 that sent as many as 3,000 objects an hour hurtling through the atmosphere.

This weekend's display is expected to be decidedly more modest, with perhaps as many as 10 meteors an hour Saturday morning, and as many as 15 an hour Tuesday morning ? a rate comparable to other Leonid showers in more recent years. Astronomers estimate that the comet shed the material for Tuesday's encounter in 1,400 AD.

The best places to view the show are in locations with little light pollution from cities or towns. At the time the shower peaks, the Leonids' apparent point of origin will be about 55 degrees above the eastern horizon. That's a bit more than halfway between the horizon and straight up, or zenith.

Bundle up and find your spot far enough in advance to allow your eyes to adjust to the dark. Your eyes become fully adapted to viewing in the dark after about 20 or 30 minutes. And if you take a flashlight, cover the lens in red cellophane to speed the process of dark-adapting once you switch off the light.

Comet Tempel-Tuttle was discovered independently by two astronomers in the mid 1860s. But it wasn't until 1981 that Donald Yeomans, a researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., tied the Leonids to Comet Tempel-Tuttle.

Yet even before the comet was discovered, the Leonids played a key role in bringing science in a young United States to wider international attention.

In 1833, the Leonids put on a breathtaking display. By some estimates, meteors were flitting through the atmosphere at rates of 100,000 to 200,000 an hour. The peak was brief enough to be visible throughout North America, but not in Europe.

The shower caught the attention of Denison Olmstead, a professor at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. He spent time gathering as much information as he could from eyewitnesses ? some of whose fields now sported meteorites ? as well as his own observations that Leo seemed to be the location in the sky from which the shower originated. Because his quest got picked up by newspapers, he was inundated with reports from up and down the East Coast.

His conclusion: Meteors were not an atmospheric phenomenon, as many long believed. Rather, they came from beyond the atmosphere. He essentially has gotten the nod for bringing the study of meteors into astronomy's fold.

So, if you happen to be watching tonight's shower from Connecticut, consider it a native-son show.

Sen. Dick Durbin: Medicare, Medicaid Fair Game in Talks to Avoid Fiscal Cliff

Sen. Dick Durbin said today that his Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate should be willing to address entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid in deficit reduction negotiations.

"From my side of the table, bring entitlement reform into the conversation," Durbin said on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." "Social Security - set aside ? doesn't add to the deficit. But when it comes to Medicare and Medicaid, protect the integrity of the program, but give it solvency for more and more years."

But Durbin ruled out raising the age of Medicare eligibility as a potential reform.

"We've got to make sure that there is seamless coverage of affordable health insurance for every American," Durbin said. "My concern about raising that Medicare retirement age is there will be gaps in coverage or coverage that's way too expensive for seniors to purchase."

Durbin added that Republicans should do more than open the door to eliminating deductions, which he said would not raise enough revenue to bring down the deficit.

"Let the [highest tax] rates go up to 39 [percent]. Let us also take a look at the deductions. Let's make sure that revenue is an integral part of deficit reduction," Durbin said.

Also speaking on "This Week," Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said that putting revenue on the table by reducing deductions for high income Americans is "fair" only if Democrats will also agree to address entitlement reform.

He added that in order to reach a deal on the so-called fiscal cliff he would defy a no-tax increase pledge that he and many Republicans made to lobbyist Grover Norquist and his group Americans for Tax Reform, a promise he first made several months ago.

"The only pledges we should be making to each other is to avoid becoming Greece," Graham said today. "Capping deductions will help generate revenue. Raising tax rates will hurt job creation so I agree with Grover we shouldn't raise rates, but I think Grover is wrong when it comes to we can't cut deductions and buy down debt."

"I will violate the pledge, long story short, for the good of the country only if Democrats will do entitlement reform," he added.

Bedard: Is Packers-Giants the new Patriots-Colts?

Green Bay looking for a little revenge Sunday night after last year's playoff loss

By Greg Bedard

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 6:23 p.m. ET Nov. 24, 2012

Greg Bedard

Sunday Night Football is turning into rivalry football.

A week after the Ravens and Steelers battled each other in the AFC North, one of the burgeoning NFC rivalries, Giants-Packers, will have another installment at MetLife Stadium.

With two young, elite quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers and Eli Manning leading each team, Giants-Packers is looking a lot like the successor to Colts-Patriots, Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning: two teams in different divisions who find a way to see each other often between the regular and postseason (sixth meeting since 2007 with Packers holding 3-2 edge).

Both Giants' wins against the Packers have come in January (2007 and ?11), in the postseason, as the Giants marched into Lambeau Field, left with a physical victory and went on to win the Super Bowl.

Last year?s 37-20 loss to the Giants ended a dream season for the Packers, who were 15-1 at the time. They lost because their execution was terrible ? giving up a Hail Mary touchdown, dropping four passes, turning the ball over four times and a plethora of missed tackles.

It?s safe to say the Packers (7-3) haven?t forgotten their performance, and the beating the Giants (6-4) put on them. Not that Green Bay will acknowledge that. It is focused on this game, not the past.

?Watching the playoff game, it wasn?t fun, I think that?s obvious,? coach Mike McCarthy said this week. ?But it?s part of our preparation for the week. A lot of the same players played in that game, played in the regular-season game (in 2011). We all understand how the season ended, but we?re focused on 8-3.?

A look at the keys for each team:

Packers
Rodgers can?t hold the ball:
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is an exceptional player with smarts, a terrific arm and very quick feet that allow him to keep plays alive or make them on his own. But sometimes Rodgers tries to do too much, tries to keep the play alive too long and that can lead to protection issues. Rodgers has been sacked 32 times this season, which is more than any other NFL quarterback. Some of those are on Rodgers for holding onto the ball too long. While the Giants rank just 13th with 25 sacks, they are capable of dominating a game with ends Jason Pierre-Paul, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck. McCarthy needs to put in a quick-pass game plan, and Rodgers needs to stick to it outside of called shot plays.

Stop the run: The Giants have gotten a bit out of whack lately with their pass-run balance, but they?ll look to establish the run more against the Packers. The Giants need the run to make their passing game, which has struggled of late, really click. The Packers (11th in the league) have done a nice job against the run now that their personnel have settled down. The defensive line of Ryan Pickett, Jerel Worthy and B.J. Raji are very sturdy and have allowed inside linebackers A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones to fill nicely. The Packers want the Giants to stay pass heavy because they?re in a slump and could get some three-and-outs that could get the Packers going.

Do your job: When the Packers have struggled the past few years, it hasn?t been because of what the opponent has done, it?s because the Packers have killed themselves with poor execution. If the Packers execute their blocks, catch the ball and tackle well, they?re a tough matchup for anyone. But they haven?t done that consistently. This also includes kicker Mason Crosby, who has been in a terrible slump. He has to make his kicks early because if he?s an issue, it could change the way the Packers play in Giants' territory for the rest of the game.

Giants
Protect up front:
Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers will probably look to bring pressure against the Giants because his front seven has a tough time winning with standout outside linebacker Clay Matthews out. Capers also knows he can?t let Eli Manning have clean reads, and his line is ripe for the taking. The Giants have had a rough time of late protecting Manning ? they were destroyed by the Bengals. Expect the Packers to throw a ton of overload blitzes at the right side of the Giants? line, where guard Kevin Boothe and David Diehl have been the weak spots. The Giants chip a lot with the running backs out of the backfield, and they might have to think about keeping a tight end in to help with protection. The Packers will be coming.

Get after Rodgers: With excellent right tackle Bryan Bulaga out for the season, the Packers have had to do a line dance with left guard T.J. Lang moving to right tackle, and backup Evan Dietrich-Smith in at left guard. Both compete really hard but are limited in their ability at those spots. Left tackle Marshall Newhouse has had problems on occasion this season, and center Jeff Saturday is not the player he once was. The Giants? defensive line should be able to dominate this game up front against the run and the pass. And that should give the Giants a really good chance of winning the game.

Get physical with the Packers? receivers: The Packers have talented targets for Rodgers in Greg Jennings (questionable after abdominal surgery), Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb and tight end Jermichael Finley. But the book on them is that they don?t like contact and can be thrown off their game if defensive backs are physical with them. It also throws off the timing of the passing offense and causes Rodgers to hold the ball longer. The Giants should try to be physical with the Packers? receivers, but they should be careful with Cobb. The speedy slot receiver is lining up in different spots every week, including running back. He could be a big problem if the Giants don?t get their hands on him. That means everyone ? ends, outside linebackers and defensive backs ? needs to make sure they hit Cobb on his releases. If he runs free, he might go all the way to the end zone.

Egypt's Mursi called "pharaoh", violent protests erupt

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi's decree exempting all his decisions from legal challenge until a new parliament was elected caused fury amongst his opponents on Friday who accused him of being the new Hosni Mubarak and hijacking the revolution.

Thousands of chanting protesters packed Tahrir Square, the heart of the 2011 anti-Mubarak uprising, demanding Mursi quit and accusing him of launching a "coup". There were violent protests in Alexandria, Port Said and Suez.

Mursi's aides said the presidential decree was to speed up a protracted transition that has been hindered by legal obstacles but Mursi's rivals were quick to condemn him as a new autocratic pharaoh who wanted to impose his Islamist vision on Egypt.

Buoyed by accolades from around the world for mediating a truce between Hamas and Israel, Mursi on Thursday ordered that an Islamist-dominated assembly writing the new constitution could not be dissolved by legal challenges.

"Mursi a 'temporary' dictator," was the headline in the independent daily Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Mursi, an Islamist whose roots are in the Muslim Brotherhood, also gave himself sweeping powers that allowed him to sack the unpopular general prosecutor and opened the door for a retrial for Mubarak and his aides.

The president's decree aimed to end the logjam and push Egypt, the Arab world's most populous nation, more quickly on its democratic path, the presidential spokesman said.

"President Mursi said we must go out of the bottleneck without breaking the bottle," Yasser Ali told Reuters.

Speaking at a Cairo mosque, Mursi told worshippers Egypt was moving forward. "I fulfill my duties to please God and the nation," he said, the official news agency reported.

The president's decree said any decrees he issued while no parliament sat could not be challenged, moves that consolidated his powers but look set to polarize Egypt further, threatening more turbulence in a nation at the heart of the Arab Spring.

The turmoil has weighed heavily on Egypt's faltering economy that was thrown a lifeline this week when a preliminary deal was reached with the International Monetary Fund for a $4.8 billion loan. But it also means unpopular economic measures.

"The people want to bring down the regime," shouted protesters in Tahrir, echoing one of the chants that was used in the uprising that forced Mubarak to step down.

In Alexandria, north of Cairo, protesters ransacked an office of the Brotherhood's political party, burning books and chairs in the streets. Supporters of Mursi and opponents clashed elsewhere in the city, leaving 12 injured.

A party building was also attacked by stone-throwing protesters in Port Said, and demonstrators in Suez threw petrol bombs that burned banners outside the party building.

"ANOTHER DICTATOR"

The decree is bound to worry Western allies, particularly the United States, a generous benefactor to Egypt's army, which effusively praised Egypt for its part in bringing Israelis and Palestinians to a ceasefire on Wednesday.

The West may become concerned about measures that, for example, undermine judicial independence. But one Western diplomat said it was too early to judge and his nation would watch how the decree was exercised in the coming days.

"We are very concerned about the possible huge ramifications of this declaration on human rights and the rule of law in Egypt," Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay, said at the United Nations in Geneva.

The United States has been concerned about the fate of what was once a close ally under Mubarak, who preserved Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel. The Gaza deal has reassured Washington but the deepening polarization of the nation will be a worry.

"The decree is basically a coup on state institutions and the rule of law that is likely to undermine the revolution and the transition to democracy," Mervat Ahmed, an independent activist in Tahrir protesting against the decree, said. "I worry Mursi will be another dictator like the one before him."

Leading liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei, who joined other politicians on Thursday night to demand the decree was withdrawn, wrote on his Twitter account that Mursi had "usurped all state powers and appointed himself Egypt's new pharaoh".

Almost two years after Mubarak was toppled and about five months since Mursi took office, propelled to the post by the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt has no permanent constitution, which must be in place before new parliamentary elections are held.

The last parliament, that sat for the first time earlier this year, was dissolved after a court declared it void. It was dominated by the Brotherhood's political party.

AIM TO END INSTABILITY

An assembly drawing up the constitution has yet to complete its work. Many liberals, Christians and others have walked out accusing the Islamists who dominate it of ignoring their voices over the extent that Islam should be enshrined in the new state.

Opponents call for the assembly to be scrapped and remade. Mursi's decree protects the existing one and extends the deadline for drafting a document by two months, pushing it back to February, further delaying a new parliamentary poll.

Explaining the rationale behind the moves, the presidential spokesman said: "This means ending the period of constitutional instability to arrive at a state with a written constitution, an elected president and parliament."

Thousands of the president's supporters gathered near the presidential palace, some holding up Mursi posters or chanting for him. The Muslim Brotherhood had called for the rally.

Analyst Seif El Din Abdel Fatah said the decree targeted the judiciary which he said had reversed, for example, an earlier Mursi decision to remove the prosecutor. Mursi's new decree protects him from such judicial reversals.

Although many of Mursi's opponents also opposed the sacked prosecutor, who they blamed for shortcomings in prosecuting Mubarak and his aides, and also want judicial reform, they say a draconian presidential decree was not the way to do it.

"There was a disease but this is not the remedy," said Hassan Nafaa, a liberal-minded political science professor and activist at Cairo University.

"I can see from the reaction of the political forces that we are going towards more polarization between the Islamist front on one hand and all the others on the other. This is a dangerous situation," he said, adding it could spark more street trouble.

The streets have been relatively quiet since Mursi took office, although this week protesters have clashed with police during rallies to mark deadly demonstrations last year.

In June, the then ruling military council issued a decree as Mursi was being elected that sought to rein in his powers, but he struck back in August issuing a decree as president revoking that, giving himself those powers and sacking top generals.

The new army leaders are now appointees of Mursi and have stepped back from politics. The military still wields hefty influence through its huge business interests and security role. But one analyst said the generals had been "neutralized."

(AP) ? Kenjon Barner ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns despite leaving the game for a time with an injury and No. 5 Oregon defeated No. 16 Oregon State 48-24 in the Civil War on Saturday, keeping alive the Ducks' hopes for a spot in the Pac-12 title game and even an outside chance at the national championship.

De'Anthony Thomas, who helped picked up the slack while Barner was on the sidelines, ran for 122 yards and three scores for the Ducks (11-1, 8-1).

After Oregon's undefeated season was thwarted by a 17-14 overtime loss to Stanford last weekend, the Ducks had to wait for UCLA's game against the Cardinal later Saturday to see who would be headed to the conference championship game. Both Oregon and Stanford started the day with one conference loss in the league's northern division.

It was Oregon's fifth straight victory in the 116-game rivalry series with the Beavers.

While the Civil War is normally the season finale for both teams, Oregon State (8-3, 6-3) will host Nicholls State next Saturday in a matchup that was supposed to open the season but was put off when Hurricane Isaac bore down on the Colonels' Thibodaux, La., campus.

The Beavers will have to wait to find out where they're headed for a bowl game, but already their season can be counted a success after they went just 3-9 last year.

Barner appeared to hurt either his abdomen or ribs late in the first half and headed to the locker room. He returned after the break, but much of the work went to Thomas until he returned on a scoring drive that made it 41-17 early in the fourth quarter.

Oregon redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota threw for 140 yards and a score, and also ran for 85 yards and a touchdown.

His Oregon State counterpart, Sean Mannion, threw for 311 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted four times. Storm Woods rushed for 70 yards and two scores.

Mannion started the first four games of the season, throwing seven touchdowns and averaging 339 yards, but injured his left knee and required surgery. Vaz, who hadn't started since high school, took over and helped the Beavers to win in the next two games, and later became the team's starter.

But Vaz sprained his left ankle in the final moments of a loss to Stanford two weeks ago, and sat out last Saturday during Oregon State's 64-14 victory at home over California. Mannion got the nod for the Civil War.

A 47,249 fans attended the game, setting Reser Stadium record.

Oregon put the Stanford loss behind them by striking quickly on their first possession with Mariota's 42-yard keeper. The touchdown drive took just 1:46, but the Ducks' 2-point try to cap it off failed.

The Beavers took a 7-6 lead on Woods' 7-yard touchdown run, but the Ducks answered on the next series with Thomas' 2-yard TD dash. Barner added a 1-yard scoring run before he was hurt.

Stanford held Barner to 66 yards the week before, but he had 141 yards before halftime against the Beavers. With his first 15 yards rushing Saturday, he moved past Derek Loville (1986-89) for second on Oregon's career rushing list.

Trevor Romaine kicked a 36-yard field goal to narrow it to 20-10 at halftime and the Beavers pulled closer with Woods' 2-yard scoring run on their first series of the second half.

It was all Ducks the rest of the way. Thomas scored on a 6-yard run to extend Oregon's lead to 27-17, before the Ducks capitalized on a Beaver fumble that led to Thomas' 29-yard touchdown run. Barner returned with his 1-yard run and Mariota found B.J. Kelley with a 2-yeard scoring pass.

Mannion hit Micah Hatfield with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds left for the final margin.

The Ducks hold a 60-46-10 advantage in the Civil War which dates back to 1894 and is the seventh-most contested rivalry in the nation.

It was the fourth time that both teams were ranked for the Civil War. The last was in 2009, when Oregon was No. 7 and Oregon State was No. 13. That game was dubbed the "War of the Roses" because the winner was guaranteed a Rose Bowl berth. Oregon won 37-33.

Nutrients from farmed salmon waste can feed new marine industry

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? Waste from salmon production is currently being discharged into Norwegian coastal waters. Researchers say this is a resource -- worth NOK 6 billion each year -- that should be exploited for new biological production.

In 2009 Norwegian fish farms produced over a million tonnes of salmon and salmon trout; nearly 1.2 million tonnes of high-quality feed went into this production. But a considerable amount of feed administered is released to the surrounding waters as respiratory products, faeces and uneaten feed .

This means that a significant portion of the aquaculture industry's feed is actually wasted on fertilising the ocean with both organic and inorganic nutrients. The value of these nutrients is estimated at NOK 6 billion annually.

Higher economic yield, less pollution

In the project "Integrated open seawater aquaculture, technology for sustainable culture of high productive areas (INTEGRATE)," researchers have studied whether this waste can be put to use as nutrients for cultivating kelp and/or mussels. The project was headed by Associate Professor Kjell Inge Reitan of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and received funding from the Research Council of Norway as part of the initiative to promote sustainable seafood production.

"The thinking is that integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) will provide significant added value on investments in aquaculture," explains Dr Reitan, "while at the same time reducing potentially negative environmental impacts."

Environmental organisations are critical of aquaculture waste as ecologically detrimental.

Kelp can help: many application areas

Researchers carrying out experiments at the research institute SINTEF have documented good growth of kelp cultivated near aquaculture facilities. Mussel cultivation under similar conditions also shows promise.

Kelp can bind large amounts of the inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus discharged by fish farms. One of Norway's most common macroalgae species, Laminaria saccharina - known as sea belt or sugar kelp -- is particularly promising for industrial cultivation for use as a biofuel and feed additive and for extracting its chemicals. Dr Reitan is now collaborating with several companies looking to cultivate kelp for large-scale bioenergy production.

"Development in this area will need to be driven by players in bioenergy and feed production," asserts Dr Reitan. "I don't believe the salmon farming industry will get involved in commercially cultivating kelp in the near future, even though integrated production would give the industry a greener profile and enhance sustainability."

Kelp should grow all year

Based on industrial discharge figures from salmon production in Norway, the researchers estimate the annual potential for IMTA-method kelp at 0.6 to 1.7 million tonnes. The potential for mussels cultivated using IMTA methods is estimated at 7 200 to 21 500 tonnes. Cultivation on this scale would require 82 to 250 square kilometres of marine area. Worldwide, roughly 14 million tonnes of aquatic plants are cultivated annually.

Kelp cultivation needs to be a year-round endeavour in order to be efficient. The researchers at SINTEF have successfully managed year-round artificial cultivation of sugar kelp sporophytes (juvenile plants).

"This makes it possible to exploit the kelp's strong growth potential when conditions are favourable," says SINTEF Research Scientist Silje Forbord.

Quadrupling mussel cultivation

The researchers estimate that using IMTA methods to utilise Norway's salmon production waste nutrients, there is potential to achieve four times the current annual 3 000 to 5 000 tonne harvest of cultivated mussels.

The Research Council's research programme Aquaculture -- An Industry in Growth (HAVBRUK) has launched the research project "Exploitation of nutrients from Salmon aquaculture (EXPLOIT)" to determine how to design and locate kelp and mussel cultivation facilities for optimal utilisation of the aquaculture industry's waste nutrients.

How Web Retailers Can Profit With Semantic SEO - DeonDesigns.ca

Semantic SEO is a fairly new Web marketing tactic that combines search engine optimization and semantic Web technology. Semantic SEO includes a focus on artificial intelligence to understand a user?s intent (i.e., the meaning of the query) in addition to the reliance on text, keywords and links in search algorithms. I wrote before about using structured markup in How Retailers Can Improve Product Visibility Using Structured Markup.

A couple weeks ago in E-Commerce SEO Using Schema.org Just Got A Lot More Granular, Aaron Bradley wrote that Google had integrated e-commerce schemas from GoodRelations into schema.org, explaining how that impacts and benefits retailers by significantly increasing ?the number of schema.org classes and properties available for e-commerce websites.?

Importance Of Structured Data

That means now, more than ever before, it?s important for retailers to put a renewed focus on the vocabularies and syntax for structured data. As explained, above, structured data sends detailed information about the meaning of your webpage content to the search engines and other data consumers in a way that can be easily processed by computers.

While there are dozens of vocabularies available, there are only two that predominantly affect retail. The most important is the GoodRelations ontology, followed by the Open Graph protocol. Henceforth, we will focus on GoodRelations.

The two most popular syntaxes are RDFa, used in the GoodRelations ontology, and Microdata, used in the Schema.org hierarchy.

Vocabularies and syntax for structured data can be summed up as semantic markup.

Semantic SEO involves the injection of semantic markup into webpages to enhance the meaning of your domain and your pages so they can be easily processed by machines, e.g., computers. As a result, these machines permit search engines to provide users with better answers to their queries.

I?ve been recommending GoodRelations ontology for retail since early 2010 and believe it?s now mandatory to include Semantic SEO as an SEO best practice, and here?s why.

All Your Business Data Digital Content Become Easily Accessible

Your business data include: rich-media video content, product reviews and ratings, location and contact information, business specialty details, special offers, product information, medical data, and the list goes on. These data are:

  • Accessible to machine-readable search engines, web applications, in car navigation systems, tablets, mobile devices, Apple maps, SIRI, Yelp maps and all computers, as well as being consumed by Linked Open Data
  • Semantic markup presents your business data like chocolate to Search Engines; they love it and eat it up!
  • Search engines understand it and know how to aggregate it for a better User Experience
  • Search Engines use structured data to display and boost CTR in the SERPs

Google Supports GoodRelations Vocabulary

Back in July 2011, Google announced support for GoodRelations. There has been preliminary evidence that search results with respective extensions get a 30% higher click-through-rate (CTR). When you add semantic markup, search engines will use that information to enhance the rendering of your page directly in the SERP.

GoodRelations is a powerful vocabulary for publishing all the details of your products and services in a way that is friendly to search engines, mobile apps, and browsers. By adding RDFa to your Web content, you provide potential customers all the features, services and benefits of doing business with you; then, your customer?s computers extract and present your information with ease. Search engines love to aggregate this information.

GoodRelations makes it easy for restaurants, hotels, rental car companies, and retailers to send daily offers, operating hours, and menu cards directly to a huge number of different smartphone applications. There?s no need to prepare individual feeds for each application that you want to support.

Where Do You Start?

It is well known by now that Mobile is crucial to Web retail. Mobile is Local, and Local is one of the most misunderstood and under-rated search tactic. Looking under the hood, most retailers fall short in several areas of Local and Semantic SEO.

The first place to start is to change your Store Locator and Mobile Store Locator. Next steps include the injection of Local SEO best practices, Maps Optimization and IYP Link Optimization.

Bill Connard, Rio SEO Senior Director Product Development says, ?When applying these important automated local SEO techniques to local search focus, you can expect to dominate and achieve multiple page-one positions in the SERPs.? To get top results for clients, Bill is injecting Schema.org [Place] and [Local Business] Microdata on all client websites.

Optimize First, Then Markup Your Data

Once you have collected, optimized and marked-up all of your local business data, you?re ready to markup your products with GoodRelations. It?s only logical that we first organize and optimize local business data first, bridging the online digital and in-store physical storefronts.

Once all the digital and physical storefronts are synched-up, search engines and Information Services are consuming the same data, known as ?data fidelity.? Data fidelity creates trust and authority, which is rewarded with multiple page-one positions in the SERPs.

Adding GoodRelations semantic markup to your pages will enhance your page-one listings with increased click-through rates (CTR). For more details about using RDFa, go to the GoodRelations Community Wiki, where you can find information about the GoodRelations vocabulary, an ontology for publishing e-commerce information that computers, mobile applications, and search engines can understand.

Retail Takeaways

Using semantic markup can get you better visibility in the SERPs and a 30% higher CTR. The GoodRelations vocabulary is an accepted Web standard for publishing e-commerce information that computers, mobile apps and search engines understand. Organizing and optimizing for Local and Mobile is a first-step must. Adding structured markup after optimizing for Local can lead to higher visibility and profits for Web retailers.

Societe Generale is considering outsourcing 400 back-office jobs at its corporate and investment bank, according to two union memos seen by Reuters.

Reuters reports that the plan, in which consulting company Accenture would take on staff working mainly in custody and securities services, could be extended to other businesses, such as broader financing, the memos suggested.

'(It is) a project to transfer 400 jobs ... Accenture is asking that the transfer be mandatory', one memo drafted by the CGT union said.

In the meantime, Bloomberg reports that Morgan Stanley was sued by DZ Bank, a clearinghouse for cooperative banks in Germany, over claims the investment bank misrepresented and omitted information about $694m in mortgage-backed securities.

Finally, The Daily Telegraph reports that UBS is braced for a record multi-million pound fine for failures in its systems and controls that allowed former employee Kweku Adoboli to conduct Britain?s biggest bank fraud.

The Swiss bank is 'ready to settle' with the Financial Services Authority which has restarted its enforcement procedures after the criminal case dramatically ended with Adoboli being jailed for seven years on Tuesday night.

Experts warned that the fine is likely to be 'tens of millions' of pounds for multiple failures of systems, controls and supervision that allowed Mr Adoboli to clock up ?1.4bn losses - the largest unauthorised trading loss in British history.

Health and Fitness: Make a Nutrition Plan to Build Muscle - Roberts ...

Nutrition and diet are very important to building muscle. It is told by experts that the process of building muscle is only 20% lifting weights, but more importantly 80% the correct diet. Learning how to build muscle is an actual science and this is why you will need a good nutrition plan.

This is not to say that you should start eating huge amounts of food. Yes you will need to eat protein and healthy carbs, but you don't want to overload your system with any one food group. Eating in this fashion will only lead to health problems in the future. Just look what happened to Arnold Schwarzenegger after eating huge amounts of protein for years!

When adding protein to your diet, you will want to give yourself a 6 ounce portion. Add to this whole wheat pasta, potatoes and brown rice. Then fill up on fresh vegetables, broccoli and carrots are great choices here. Also be sure to drink milk as this helps in building muscle fast. Chocolate milk works really well here and tastes good to boot.

You will want to be eating at least 3,000 calories for muscle growth to work efficiently. Some weight lifters will eat up to 5,000 calories depending upon their starting weight and body size.
