Education: B.A., economics with honors, Gustavus Adolphus College (1985);?MBA, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota (1991)

When U.S. Bank decided to launch a new service for its ultra-high net worth clients, it turned to one of its veteran bankers and leaders: Charlene Altman. A 27-year employee who has risen from a commercial lending trainee to manager of private banking, Altman was drafted to lead an important startup.

Altman, who serves essentially as the chief operating officer for the Minneapolis office of Ascent Private Capital Management, is the primary point of contact for its clients, who have $25 million or more in investable assets. She leads them through key decision-making for their comprehensive wealth-management strategies, often highly complex plans tailored to meet each family?s objectives.

?The position resonates with me. Our focus isn?t just about managing wealth; it?s about managing the impact of that wealth,? notes Altman. ?It?s the idea that wealth is more than money. We offer stewardship for clients to help them think strategically about their wealth.?

That means executing a strategic approach for numerous challenges, from portfolio construction to intergenerational wealth transfers and philanthropy. She also took on responsibility for identifying and securing new clients, then moving them into the group and deepening their relationships with Ascent. Under Altman?s leadership in its first year, the Minneapolis office of Ascent substantially grew both its assets under management and clients served.

But for Altman, her work isn?t all about the numbers. She has strongly emphasized mentoring ? formal and informal ? throughout her career. Reaching out to young employees and recent college graduates (especially young women), Altman guides them to positions of greater responsibility.

?I?ve been so blessed during my career, coming out of college and right into the training program,? says Altman. ?Mentoring is one of the ways I give back. I?ve always tried to bring out the best in people, to play up their strengths and encourage [them] to find something that really challenges them.?
