McKenzie High Jan. 3, Sports Update


MCKENZIE BRIDGE, Oregon (STPNS) -- Eagles Double Down Devils

The McKenzie Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams both defeated the visiting Lowell Red Devils respective teams on Friday, Dec. 21. The Eagle girls defeated Lowell convincingly, 58 to 38, and remained undefeated in Mt. West League play at 3-0. League rival Triangle Lake is also undefeated at 4-0 while Lowell remained in third place at 3-2. In the Lowell game Makaila Hiddleston paced her team with 17 points. Teammate and sister Buggy Hiddleston added 12 points. No other team or individual stats have been made available.

The Eagle Boys were led on the evening by Senior Victor Vidal who scored 16 points in the contest, won by McKenzie 58-40. Blake Anderson and Caleb Scrivner each nearly tallied a double-double as they both scored 10 points and hauled down 9 rebounds. Scrivner was dominant in the defensive key as he added 6 blocked shots. McKenzie is undefeated in Mt. West League play at 4-0 along with Triangle Lake at 5-0. Crow and Siletz Valley are close behind at 3-1. No other team or individual stats have been made available.

McKenzie Girls Grab 4th at 1A Hoops Classic

The Eagle Girls earned the 4th place honors in the annual 1A Hoops Classic at Portland Lutheran High School in Portland. The Eagles tipped off the first game against the currently 4th ranked City Christian Lions from the Valley 10 League. City defeated the Eagles 41-31 to send McKenzie to the Consolation round. In the second game, the Eagles met the New Hope Christian Lady Warriors from the Skyline League and McKenzie won easily 42-24. With the win, the Eagles earned a shot in the Consolation

Finals against the Country Christian Cougars of the Casco League. McKenzie won the contest and 4th place in the three day Tournament in a tight game 43-42. The Eagles had defeated the Cougars earlier in the season 50-37. With the win, McKenzie is now 7-2 overall and currently ranked 18th in the OSAA State 1A rankings. No other individual or team stats for the games were made available.

Eagle Boys Earn 6th Place at 1A Hoops Classic

The defending 2011 1A Hoops Champion McKenzie found the field a bit tougher this year as they won 1 game and dropped 2 to finish in 6th place at the annual basketball tournament hosted by Portland Lutheran. The Eagles drew a tough draw in the opening game as they hooked up against the current and undefeated #1 ranked City Christian Lions of the Valley 10 League. City Christian easily dispatched the Eagles 66-44, and continued their winning ways to claim the Tournament Championship against Hosanna Christian. Eagle Jon Mahody led his team with 14 points while teammate Caleb Scrivner added a double-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. McKenzie faced the Dufur Rangers of the Big Sky League in the consolation round and earned a hard fought victory 51-46. With the win the Eagles advanced to the Consolation Finals against the Country Christian Warriors. Blake Anderson had a nice game for McKenzie as he dropped in 14 points on the evening to lead his team. Jon Mahody was close as he added 13 points and Victor Vidal also scored in double figures with 11 points. Against the Cougars of Country Christian, the Eagles lost 36-47. Country Christian had defeated the Eagles earlier in the season 39-49. McKenzie currently stands at 5-6 overall on the season. No other team or individual stats were available for publication.

The McKenzie squads return to the Mt. West League schedule this week as they travel to Alsea on Friday, Jan. 4.
