State softball: Lady Bruins hang on versus Madison County (UPDATE)
Update: 12:30 a.m.: Northwest Whitfield survived an 8-7 extra-inning affair with Madison County Thursday night in the second round of the Class 4A softball state tournament in Columbus.
Northwest led 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but Lady Bruins pitcher Emily Boyd walked in the tying run. She made up for it with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth as Northwest scored five runs. The Lady Raiders scored four runs in their half of the inning, but after Boyd and Brileigh Baggett swapped in and out and back in on the pitching rubber, Boyd got a ground-ball back to her for the final out.
Northwest (33-3) will play West Laurens today at 7 p.m. in the championship bracket final. If the Lady Bruins win, they will earn a spot in the state championship and be one win from the title. If they lose, they must win once early Saturday morning to reach the state championship, where they will need to beat West Laurens twice.
? Northwest 8, Rutland 0: Lady Bruins senior ace Emily Boyd struck out seven while allowing one hit and a walk in the opening-round, which was shortened to five innings by the GHSA?s mercy rule. Rutland (21-9-1) fell into the consolation bracket of the double-elimination event.
The Lady Bruins (32-3) will play again at 7:45 p.m. today in the championship bracket semifinals, taking on Madison County (31-6), the second-ranked team in the Ga.PrepCountry.com Class 4A coaches poll. Northwest is No. 1 in the poll.
Win or lose, Northwest ? which is shooting for the state title after top-four finishes in two of the past three seasons ? won?t play again until Friday.
The final eight teams from each division ? Classes 2A through 6A, plus the public and private divisions for Class A ? are all at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus to determine their champions in the three-day event. Championships will be played Saturday.
