7-minute workout? Too good to be true? - WLUK Fox 11

GREENVILLE - An effective 7-minute workout?? Sound too good to be true?? Well the American College of Sports Medicine's Health and Fitness Journal says it isn't.

For many people it's tough finding time to get the recommended half hour of exercise everyday.? So a seven minute workout sounds like a good solution.

"It is convenient and you get a lot of the benefits in a short time," said Trevor Dyreson, the fitness center manager at the Fox West YMCA.

Dyreson told FOX 11? the American College of Sports Medicine's seven minute high intensity circuit workout can work.? It's twelve exercises use your own body weight or a chair to work your upper and lower body.? Those include moves like push ups and squats.? You do each exercise for 30 seconds and rest for ten seconds in between.

"It's the same dynamic as if you'd imagine running on a treadmill for half an hour, you're just getting more done in a smaller time frame," explained Dyreson.

But there's a catch.

"To get the full benefit you have to do everything with the right technique for the entire 30 seconds, which is where problems lie," explained Dyreson.

Dyreson told us you should consult a fitness expert to get the technique down first.? Otherwise you could miss out on the benefits or hurt yourself.

ThedaCare Doctor Dan Sutton told FOX 11 getting the workout right will make you healthier.

"It can have gains for both strength and fat-burning, there's some evidence that for diabetics it can have benefits," said Sutton.

However, he told us, the seven-minute circuit training in and of itself isn't really enough.

"For overall cardiovascular health you're still gonna derive benefit from getting a more prolonged aerobic workout," explained Sutton.

So while the circuit can be good on the days you're short on time, it's not a quick fix.

"It's something you really have to dedicate yourself to.? It's a lifestyle," said Dyreson.
