Current TV fires Keith Olbermann

By Lucas Shaw, TheWrap.com

Current TV has fired Keith Olbermann, a network spokeswoman told TheWrap.

The controversial news host has been at the fledgling cable channel for less than a year.

Eliot Spitzer will replace Olbermann starting Friday night, the network announced.

More from TheWrap.com: Rift between Olbermann, Current deepens

Olberman got into a contretemps with the network over his role during Republican primary election coverage last December. But the host has a history of butting heads with management and other bosses, starting with ESPN, including MSNBC and now with the leadership at Current.

In its move on Friday, Current was clearly fed up with its star newsman.

?"Current was also founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it," the network wrote in a letter to viewers published on its website.

Back in early January, executives at Current TV said that relations ? especially those with Current CEO Joel Hyatt ? were at a breaking point after deteriorating over several months.

More from TheWrap.com: SAG and AFTRA merger overwhelming approved by membership

Olbermann declined to cover the Iowa caucus when he learned he would have to share the hosting chair with others.

Here is the full memo from the Current website:

To the Viewers of Current:

We created Current to give voice to those Americans who refuse to rely on corporate-controlled media and are seeking an authentic progressive outlet.? We are more committed to those goals today than ever before.

Current was also founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers.?? Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.?

We are moving ahead by honoring Current's values. ?Current has a fundamental obligation to deliver news programming with a progressive perspective that our viewers can count on being available daily -- especially now, during the presidential election campaign.? Current exists because our audience desires the kind of perspective, insight and commentary that is not easily found elsewhere in this time of big media consolidation.

As we move toward this summer's political conventions and the general election in the fall, Current is making significant new additions to our broadcasts.?? We have just debuted six hours of new programming each weekday with Bill Press ("Full Court Press, at 6 am ET/3 am PT) and Stephanie Miller ("Talking Liberally," at 9 am ET/6 pm PT).???

We?re very excited to announce that beginning tonight, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer will host ?Viewpoint with Eliot Spitzer,? at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT.? Eliot is a veteran public servant and an astute observer of the issues of the day. He has important opinions and insights and he relishes the kind of constructive discourse that our viewers will appreciate this election year.?

We are confident that our viewers will be able to count on Governor Spitzer to deliver critical information on a daily basis.

All of these additions to Current's lineup are aimed at achieving one simple goal -- thegoal that has always been central to Current's mission:? To tell stories no one else will tell, to speak truth to power, and to influence the conversation of democracy on behalf of those whose voice is too seldom heard.? We, and everyone at Current, want to thank our viewers for their continued steadfast support.

Sincerely,

Al Gore & Joel Hyatt

Current's Founders

Former-Minnesota employee fights for her just compensation ...

A 21-year-old woman formerly from Eagan was riding her motorcycle to an after-work meeting for her position at Noodles & Co., when crashed into another vehicle. Her medical bills exceeded a staggering $250,000 and to compound matters, the woman was uninsured.

Initially, the woman was issued a denial of workers' compensation by her employer's insurance company. The insurance company denied her claims on the grounds that she was traveling to a social function rather than a business function -- a happy hour of sorts rather than a meeting.

The former-Minnesota victim proved that the meeting was in fact called to discuss work matters, and that the insurance company for Noodles & Co. was liable for workers' compensation payments. Now the woman faces the challenge of proving that her employer and its insurance company worked to block her receipt of benefits.

This victim's case claims that Noodles & Co. and its insurance company prohibited the victim from obtaining more than $308,000. If the victim wins her case, she could be entitled to substantial compensation.

This case shows the extent to which the circle of workplace accidents can extend. This victim was not in the physical place of work during the time of her accident, but because she was traveling for a work meeting, the company is held liable, and the victim is entitled to compensation.

If the former-Minnesota woman can prove that the company deliberately toiled to block her receipt of benefits, she could be entitled to additional compensation. When a victim is injured either at their place of work or when traveling for work, they may be entitled to compensation.

The Healthiest Snack

?

?

For decades people have been noshing on popcorn as a healthy alternative to other high fat/calorie indulgences. Numerous blogs are posted, articles are written, and weight loss support groups converse about the benefits of the air-popped treat.

?

Has anyone ever mentioned that popcorn may be healthier than some veggies?

Joe will tell you. Joe Vinson is a professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton who has so graciously helped many women justify the need for chocolate, by identifying the health benefits almost a decade ago.

?

According to Vinson's research, popcorn is heavy in antioxidants called polyphenols. Since popcorn is only about 4 percent water ? compared to 90 percent for many fruits and vegetables ? the polyphenols are present in greater concentrations in popcorn. The same principle works for dried fruits, which also contain less water

?

After reading the fact that popcorn's dryness is actually a benefit, it makes me welcome that big glass of water I gulp down. I am also a big fan of whole grain snack for another reason. Popcorn is the only snack that is 100% unprocessed whole grain. Since the water content is extremely low, popcorn is able to retain 51% of the whole grain weight. One serving can provide more than 70% of the daily intake value for a whole grain. Judging how the average person only gets about half of that serving in a day, having a bowl of popcorn is looking a "whole" lot better.

?

Let's not forget the popping concept. How you pop your popcorn makes a huge difference. Air-popped versus microwave popped is substantially healthier. Microwave popcorn contains PFCs (perfluorinated compounds), says Joy Bauer, nutritionist expert for the Today show. PFCs "have been shown to suppress immune function and cause cancer in animals." Companies are slowly looking for a way to remove the chemical.

Amongst staying far from the microwave, movie theater popcorn is also out of the question. Slathering on oil, butter, and salt makes the snack so much more delectable, but did you know that Popcorn at the Movies Can Equal Three Cheeseburgers? This $12 snack can cost you 1600 calories and up to 60 grams of saturated fat. That is the amount of saturated fat in a stick of butter and the amount of calories in 2 sticks of butter. But we certainly will not be snacking on that at the movies.

?

What do you think about popcorn being the healthiest snack?

Trayvon Martin PSAs: Chaka Khan, Other Celebrities, Ordinary People Pay Tribute to Slain Teen

A pair of videos - one featuring celebrities, one starring ordinary people - have surfaced online as public service announcements and tributes to Trayvon Martin.

In the first, singer Chaka Khan enlists help from celebrity friends Kelly Price, Eric Benét, Eva Pigford, Kenny Latimore, Terry Crews, Angela Bassett, Kimberly Elise and Loretta Devine, creating this public service announcement for Trayvon Martin:

Donning a black hoodie, Chaka sings “A mama’s cryin’ ’cause another young man has gone and died. He’s not some statistic. He’s an awesome destiny denied.”

In a second video, filmmakers from Newark, N.J., assembled 30 African-American males to lend their voices to speak out on the Trayvon Martin case and the way they believe black males are being perceived in the media and society.

They, too, wear hooded sweatshirts as audio of a 911 dispatcher speaking to George Zimmerman, and Geraldo Rivera's comments, play in the background:

The tributes are moving, however, some have suggested that Martin becoming a national symbol and media obsession has indirectly led to bias against George Zimmerman, who claims self-defense and has not been charged with a crime.

Martin's death is a tragedy and the public is right to question why an unarmed teen was slain. Yet making Trayvon into a martyr or entertainment form oversimplifies a complex matter does little to honor his memory - or the accused's right to due process.

It's important to consider all sides of the issue. Do you agree?

Choosing a School for a Business Bachelors Degree Online Program

Graduates of a business bachelors degree online course still face some skepticism from old school employers who doubt the credibility of online education. To counter such negative outlooks, it is important to check the school?s reputation and the accreditation of the degree program you plan to enroll in. A reputable traditional school offering online education will ensure that its online degrees are just as good as its on-campus versions. There are also several reviews on the internet regarding the quality of online schools. Accreditation from accrediting agencies recognized by the US Department of Education ensures that the school adheres to the acceptable standards for quality education.

Tickets scarce for NCAA women's Final Four and online prices sky-high

Waco accountant Richard Kaga, 63, already has booked rooms in Denver, and made flight reservations to take him and three others to the NCAA Women?s Final Four basketball tournament the first week of April.

Now all he needs are a couple of tickets.

Kaga loves the Lady Bears and just knows they will win their way to the Final Four. He and his wife, Betty, and two close friends began planning this trip right after the team lost to Texas A&M during regionals last year.

He never dreamed that getting into the 19,028-seat Pepsi Center to watch the games would prove daunting. He is a member of the Baylor Bear Foundation and owned four season tickets to watch the 2011-12 Lady Bears.

But tickets to the biggest games in the Big Dance are proving more scarce than off-nights by junior post Brittney Griner.

If Baylor reaches the Final Four, it and three other teams will receive 700 tickets apiece to distribute as they wish.

The school can give each player up to four tickets. Others may go to the school?s traveling party, band members and administrators, leaving the balance for season-ticket holders and Bear Foundation members.

?We have requests and commitments for more than 700 tickets. So as things stand now, we will not have any go on sale to the public,? said Matt Johnson, assistant athletic director for ticket operations.

Because of Kaga?s longtime support of Baylor athletics, the school offered him the opportunity to apply for two tickets. He needed four, so he declined the invitation and is pursuing tickets through other sources.

?I don?t blame Baylor; I blame the NCAA for making so few tickets available to each team,? said Kaga, whose allegiance to the school goes back decades.

His parents had season tickets to Baylor football games beginning in the 1960s, and he has had season tickets to the Lady Bears since coach Kim Mulkey arrived in 2000.

General public

The NCAA said Thursday that besides allocating 2,800 tickets to teams that reach the Final Four, it made more than 6,000 tickets available to the general public. They lasted about as long as an Odyssey Sims-led fast break.

Other tickets are set aside for corporate sponsors, NCAA officials and host-city invitees.

Still, there are websites and ticket-exchange outlets for fans willing to splurge.

?I?ve been going online, and I was surprised at just how many tickets there are out there. But be prepared to pay,? said De Ann Smith, executive director of a Baylor athletic support group called Bear Force One.

She said various sites were offering single tickets for $360, or a pair of tickets for $500 to $700. Smith said one offer that caught her attention was $1,700 for a single seat in the Pepsi Center?s lower level.

The face value of single tickets for the Final Four is $125 for the balcony, $150 for the club level and $185 for the lower level.

Tickets give fans seats for the two semifinal games April 1 and the championship April 3.

The website centextickets.com is offering three-game tickets for ?$400 and up,? according to a spokesman who asked that his name not be used. He said he is seeing more demand for Final Four women?s tickets than in the past.

?It?s probably because there is a team in this area trying to win it all and go undefeated,? said the spokesman, referring to the surging Lady Bears. ?I have a local customer base.?

?This is a great problem to have,? Smith said. ?I?m excited that Baylor has arrived at the point (where) tickets are a rarity.?

She added that a source told her prices for Final Four tickets may drop as teams get eliminated between now and April 1.

For example, she said, the Tennessee Volunteers, a perennial power, have made it to the Sweet 16 and are competing in the same Des Moines, Iowa, regional as Baylor. If Tennessee gets eliminated and has no chance to advance to Denver, Vols fans who had bought Final Four tickets likely will sell them for whatever they can get.

Rick Nixon, associate director with NCAA Championships and Alliances, said those desperate to attend the Final Four can visit PrimeSport.com, which is identified as the NCAA?s official ticket exchange site.

A visit there Thursday revealed several single tickets priced at $360. One seller was offering up to 11 tickets priced at $675 each, while another advertised six tickets for $1,260 apiece.

Nixon said the NCAA earmarked tickets for the organization in Denver planning to host the championship games. Fans can inquire about spares at www.denversports.org.

NBA size

The NCAA, Nixon said, wants to host women?s Final Four games in arenas of ?NBA size.? The Pepsi Center serves as home to the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association.

And Texas A&M University won the title last year in the 18,165-seat Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., where the NBA?s Indiana Pacers play.

The Alamodome in San Antonio, a football stadium that can accommodate 39,500 for basketball, hosted the Final Four in 2010, when Baylor was eliminated by the Connecticut Huskies.

?We believe the NBA arenas are the right-size venue for our championship right now, in terms of the overall experience we want to provide the fans,? said the NCAA?s Nixon.

But fans like Waco?s Kaga said the smaller sites sometimes force ticket hunters to take desperate measures.

He secured two tickets for $500 from an individual selling online. He met another seller through Craigslist and made a similar deal for two more tickets, giving him the four he needed.

?But I got scammed,? he said. ?I sent the money via Western Union, though Craigslist clearly warns users not to do that. The deal sounded authentic. My money was supposed to go to an intermediary who would get the tickets released when my money arrived. I?ve heard nothing since.?

He said Western Union ?was sympathetic,? but it could do nothing to remedy the situation. Kaga said he agreed to share his story as a warning to use caution when pursuing tickets online.

?Now I need two more tickets,? he said. ?This was a setback, but we will be at that game.?

Sky diver, after free-falling 13 miles, sets sights on record 23-mile jump

Felix Baumgartner landed successfully after a free-fall jump from 13 miles above Roswell, N.M., on Thursday. His ultimate aim: a 23-mile dive during which he would break the sound barrier.

Felix Baumgartner calls it the ultimate sky dive, and he's more than halfway there.

The Austrian-born parachute jumper successfully landed after a free-fall jump from 13 miles above Roswell, N.M., on Thursday. The feat is the first of a pair of test jumps en route to a free-fall jump from 23 miles above Earth's surface, during which Mr. Baumgartner would break the sound barrier as he plunges. The jump for the record books is planned for later this year.

Only two other humans have safely parachuted after free falls from higher altitudes. US Air Force pilot Joseph Kittinger set a manned-balloon altitude record in 1961, then jumped from the balloon, which had reached 102,800 feet. In 1962, Russian Eugene Andreev completed a jump from 80,380 feet. Baumgartner's plunge on Thursday came at 71,581 feet.

The test was designed to take Baumgartner into a region above the Armstrong line, an altitude of between 62,000 and 63,500 feet named for a former US Air Force flight surgeon-general who is widely considered the father of space medicine. The Armstrong limit is the highest altitude a human can reach and survive outside a pressurized environment ? either a cabin or suit. At that altitude, the atmosphere's pressure is so low that water boils away at a human's body temperature. Outside temperatures hover around minus 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

A space-suited Baumgartner rode to his jump altitude in a pressurized capsule that dangled below a 165-foot-tall helium balloon.

The ascent went flawlessly, according to the project's sponsors, Red Bull USA, an energy drink producer. During Baumgartner's 3-minute, 33-second free-fall, he reached a speed of 364.4 miles an hour. He opened his parachute when he was just under 8,000 feet above the New Mexico desert.

One unanticipated aspect of the jump, he acknowledged, was a need to get used to the amount of time the free fall takes. ?I wanted to open the parachute after descending awhile,? he said in a prepared statement. ?But I noticed I was still at an altitude of 50,000 feet.?

In addition, the team needs to figure out a better way to keep his hands warm.

?I could hardly move my hands? because of the cold, Baumgartner said. ?We're going to have to do some work on that.?

Once Baumgartner had left the capsule, small explosive charges detonated to cut the capsule free from the balloon. The capsule deployed its own parachute for a damage-free return.

The next test jump aims to reach 90,000 feet ? three times the altitude at which commercial airliners travel ??before Baumgartner takes the plunge.

When the run for the record takes place sometime this summer, Baumgartner reportedly will free fall from 120,000 feet for about 5-1/2 minutes and hit a top speed of 690 miles an hour, breaking the sound barrier. The descent overall is expected to take up to 20 minutes.

International Galaxy S II ICS source code now available

Galaxy S II

Following last week's Ice Cream Sandwich update release for the international Samsung Galaxy S II, the kernel source code (along with other open-source odds and ends) for the new firmware has been released online. Android's Linux kernel lies at the heart of the OS, and kernel source code for Android devices must be released by manufacturers under the GNU General Public License.

While the code won't be of any use to your average Galaxy S II owner, custom firmware developers will welcome its release, as it'll assist them with the development of ICS ROMs for the device. That in turn makes for better custom ROMs, which is good news for everyone.

To grab the code for yourself, head to the source link and type "i9100" in the search box.

(AP) ? A diverging portrait of the Army sergeant accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers is emerging as records and interviews reveal a man appreciated by friends and family who won military commendations, yet one who faced professional disappointment, financial trouble and brushes with the law.

The more complex picture included details on how Robert Bales was bypassed for promotion, struggled to pay for his house and eyed a way out of his job at a Washington state military base months before he was accused of the horrific nighttime slaughter in two Afghanistan villages.

While Bales, 38, sat in an isolated cell at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.'s military prison Saturday, classmates and neighbors from suburban Cincinnati, Ohio, remembered him as a "happy-go-lucky" high school football player who took care of a special needs child and watched out for troublemakers in the neighborhood.

But court records and interviews show that the 10-year veteran ? with a string of commendations for good conduct after four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan ? had joined the Army after a Florida investment job went sour, had a Seattle-area home condemned, struggled to make payments on another and failed to get a promotion or a transfer a year ago.

His legal troubles included charges that he assaulted a girlfriend and, in a hit-and run accident, ran bleeding in military clothes into the woods, court records show. He told police he fell asleep at the wheel and paid a fine to get the charges dismissed, the records show.

Military officials say that after drinking on a southern Afghanistan base, Bales crept away on March 11 to two slumbering villages overnight, shooting his victims and setting many of them on fire. Nine of the 16 killed were children and 11 belonged to one family.

"This is some crazy stuff if it's true," Steve Berling, a high school classmate, said of the revelations about the father of two known as "Bobby" in his hometown of Norwood, Ohio.

Bales hasn't been charged yet in the shootings, which have endangered complicated relations between the U.S. and Afghanistan and threatened to upend U.S. policy over the decade-old war.

His former platoon leader said Saturday that Bales was a model soldier inspired by 9/11 to serve, who saved lives in firefights on his second of three Iraq deployments.

"He's one of the best guys I ever worked with," said Army Capt. Chris Alexander, who led Bales on a 15-month deployment in Iraq.

"He is not some psychopath. He's an outstanding soldier who has given a lot for this country."

But pressing family troubles were hinted at by his wife, Kari, on multiple blogs posted with names like The Bales Family Adventures and BabyBales. ?A year ago, she wrote that Bales was hoping for a promotion or a transfer after nine years stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord outside Tacoma, Wash.

"We are hoping to have as much control as possible" over the future, Kari Bales wrote last March 25. "Who knows where we will end up. I just hope that we are able to rent our house so that we can keep it. I think we are both still in shock."

After Bales lost out on a promotion to E7 ? a sergeant first-class ? the family hoped to go to either Germany, Italy or Hawaii for an "adventure," she said. They hoped to move by last summer; instead the Army redeployed his unit ? the 2nd Infantry Division of the 3rd Stryker Brigade, named after armored Stryker vehicles ? to Afghanistan.

It would be Bales' fourth tour in a war zone. He joined the military two months after 9/11 and spent more than three years in Iraq during three separate assignments since 2003. His attorney said he was injured twice in Iraq ? once losing part of his foot ? but his 20 or so commendations do not include the Purple Heart, given to soldiers wounded in combat.

Alexander said Bales wasn't injured while he oversaw him during their deployment ? Bales' second in Iraq. He called Bales a "very solid" noncommissioned officer who didn't have more difficulty than his fellow soldiers with battlefield stress. Bales shot at a man aiming a rocket-propelled grenade at his platoon's vehicle in Mosul, Iraq, sending the grenade flying over the vehicle.

"There's no doubt he saved lives that day," Alexander said. The charges he killed civilians is "100 percent out of character for him," he said.

Bales always loved the military and war history, even as a teenager, said Berling, who played football with him in the early 1990s on a team that included Marc Edwards, a future NFL player and Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots.

"I remember him and the teacher just going back and forth on something like talking about the details of the Battle of Bunker Hill," he said. "He knew history, all the wars."

Bales exulted in the role once he finally achieved it. Plunged into battle in Iraq, he told an interviewer for a Fort Lewis base newspaper in 2009 that he and his comrades proved "the real difference between being an American as opposed to being a bad guy."

Bales joined the Army, Berling said, after studying business at Ohio State University ? he attended three years but didn't graduate ? and handled investments before the market downturn pushed him out of the business. Florida records?show that Bales was a director at an inactive company called Spartina Investments Inc. in Doral, Fla.; his brother, Mark Bales, and a Mark Edwards were also listed as directors.

"I guess he didn't like it when people lost money," Berling said.

He was struggling to keep payments on his own home in Lake Tapps, a rural reservoir community about 35 miles south of Seattle; his wife asked to put the house on the market three days before the shootings, real estate Philip Rodocker said.

"She told him she was behind in our payments," Rodocker told The New York Times. "She said he was on his fourth tour and it was getting kind of old and they needed to stabilize their finances."

The house was not officially put on the market until Monday; on Tuesday, Rodocker said, Bales' wife called and asked to take the house off the market, talking of a family emergency.

Bales and his wife bought the Lake Tapps home in 2005, according to records, for $280,000; it was listed this week at $229,000. Overflowing boxes were piled on the front porch, and a U.S. flag leaned against the siding.

The sale may have been a sign of financial troubles. Bales and his wife also own a home in Auburn, about 10 miles north, according to county records, but abandoned it about two years ago, homeowners' association president Bob Baggett said. Now signs posted on the front door and window by the city warn against occupying the house.

"It was ramshackled," Baggett said. "They were not dependable. When they left there were vehicles parts left on the front yard...we'd given up on the owners."

New details about the sergeant rippled across the country on Saturday.

"It's our Bobby. He was the local hero," said Michael Blevins, who grew up down the street from him in Norwood, Ohio. The youngest of five boys respected older residents, admonished troublemakers and loved children, even helping another boy in the area who had special needs.

In Washington state, court records showed a 2002 arrest for assault on a girlfriend. Bales pleaded not guilty and was required to undergo 20 hours of anger management counseling, after which the case was dismissed.

A separate hit-and-run charge was dismissed in Sumner, Wash.'s municipal court three years ago, according to records. It isn't clear from court documents what Bales hit; witnesses saw a man in a military-style uniform, with a shaved head and bleeding, running away.

When deputies found him in the woods, Bales told them he fell asleep at the wheel. He paid about $1,000 in fines and restitution and the case was dismissed in October 2009.

Dan Conway, a military attorney who represented one of four Lewis-McChord soldiers convicted in the deliberate killings of three Afghan civilians in 2010, said whether legal scrapes affect a soldier's career depends in part on whether they prompt the Army to issue administrative penalties. The punishments are typically recorded in official personnel files.

Over the past decade, Conway said, the military has sometimes been lax in administering such punishments. As a result, soldiers who might be bad apples sometimes remain in service longer than they otherwise might have.

"It's something you want to note," Conway said. "The best predictor of future violence is past violence."

Bales' lawyer, John Henry Browne of Seattle, said he didn't know if his client had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder at the time of the shootings, but said it could be an issue at trial if experts believe it's relevant.

He also said Friday he didn't know if his client had been drinking the night of the massacre.

Browne didn't return telephone calls on Saturday. His legal team has said Browne will be meeting with Bales at Fort Leavenworth next week.
