Honeywell next up to get a patent license from Microsoft, goes the Android handheld route

Honeywell next up to get a patent license from Microsoft, goes the Android route

Stop us if you've heard this one before: a company that wants to start using (or keep using) a Google OS strikes a patent licensing deal with Microsoft to avoid the legal barrage that will invariably follow if it says no. It's Honeywell singing the tune this time, and the company has reached an agreement that will let it use Android or Chrome OS on devices like a new edition of the Dolphin 7800 rugged handheld (shown here) without perpetually looking over its shoulder. Neither side is going into the specifics, although Microsoft has steered Honeywell into using its boilerplate copy about royalties trading hands. The truce won't help the prices of Honeywell devices; even so, it's good news for developers and customers who've been part of the company's official Android feedback program. We're still yearning for the day when we can get root access on a Honeywell thermostat.

First clashes near Christian areas of Damascus: NGO

Fighting between soldiers and rebels broke out on Wednesday for the first time near two Christian districts of Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"Fighting erupted at dawn on Wednesday on the outskirts of the Bab Tuma and Bab Sharqi neighbourhoods. First indications are that one soldier has been killed," the Britain-based group said in a statement.

"This is fighting in areas where it has not happened before. These are areas where the rebels have so far not had access," Observatory chief Rami Abdel rahman told AFP.

One witness said rebels attacked a military position outside Bab Sharqi at 4:00 am (0100 GMT) in a clash that lasted for 15 minutes.

An AFP correspondent said calm later returned to the area.

Bab Tuma and Bab Sharqi are traditional Christian quarters in the Old City of Damascus, previously popular with tourists and the location of several hotels. They have also been the scene of several pro-regime protests in the past.

Earlier the Local Coordination Committees (LCC) that organises protests on the ground, reported a blast and heavy gunfire from Baghdad Street, a main arterial route through the city.

The LCC also said that the capital's southern suburb of Tadamun was hit by mortar fire at dawn.

Damascus residents heard explosions and intermittent gunfire late on Tuesday in several districts, notably in the southwestern neighbourhood of Kfar Sousa.

Fighting in that district broke out again on Monday after a lull when rebels attacked a checkpoint of regime forces using rocket-propelled grenades.

Since July 20, the battle between the rebels and government forces has focused on the country's commercial capital Aleppo in the north.

On Tuesday 154 people -- among them 35 civilians, 63 soldiers and 27 rebels -- were killed in violence nationwide, around half in Aleppo.

Both troops and rebels poured into Aleppo on Tuesday as both sides battened down for the long haul after 40 police were killed on day four of a pivotal battle in the nearly 17-month conflict.

According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 20,000 people have been killed since the uprising broke out in mid-March last year.

There is no way to independently verify the figure, while the UN has stopped keeping count.

Campaign-Season Vacations Are OK, but Beware of Water Sports

Democrats who remember their nominee windsurfing his way to defeat in 2004 are thrilled that President Obama won?t be hobnobbing with the elite in Martha?s Vineyard this August. But even as they make fun of Republican Mitt Romney?s recent vacation, it?s worth noting that the leader of the free world could benefit from some downtime.

The age-old Washington debate over where, when, and how much a president should vacation predates both Washington and democracy itself. ?Don't leave Rome!... There is no time for vacations during a campaign,? Quintus Cicero implored his brother, Marcus Tullius, in 64 B.C. More than 2,000 years later, Obama seems to be taking that advice.

(GALLERY: The Tricky Politics of Candidate Vacations)

Election-year pressures didn?t stop challenger Romney from heading to his Lake Winnipesaukee estate for his usual summer break: a week of competitive sports with his children and grandchildren. Romney?s unshakable commitment to a summer reunion demonstrated the candidate?s family values, but it also provided political opponents with photos of Romney sitting on a Jet Ski and driving a swanky motorboat. The pictures revived memories of Sen. John Kerry,?D-Mass., the 2004 Democratic nominee, whose windsurfing hobby provided footage for a highly effective attack ad.

?For Romney to say, 'I want to take some time off' ? that is a smart move. For Romney to say, ?I want to take some time off and go out on a Jet Ski? ? that?s a stupid move. His problem was optics, not rest,? said Tad Devine, president of Devine Mulvey and a senior strategist to Kerry?s presidential campaign. Devine knows that it?s all too easy for vacation footage to fuel a negative stereotype: George W. Bush?s ?reelection campaign used windsurfing to reinforce the image of Kerry as a flip-flopper, zig-zagging with the wind.

Although the Jet Ski visual didn?t ruffle many Republican feathers, it played right into Democrats? attempts to portray Romney as the candidate of the wealthy and Obama as the candidate sensitive to the struggles of the middle class. ?Obama probably wanted to stay away from a vacation that smacked of privilege,? said Paul A. Beck, political-science professor at Ohio State University.

Obama is not the first president to spurn Martha?s Vineyard for political reasons. Former President Bill Clinton famously swapped the Vineyard for Jackson Hole, Wyo., on the advice of his pollster, a move that the Clintons didn?t particularly enjoy.

?The public was sick of the photos of his hobnobbing with celebrities and cruising on their yachts and?the polling showed that they would rather see their president camping in the Rockies. So he went for two vacations ? 1995 and 1996 ? and hated it,? the pollster in question, Dick Morris, told U.S. News and World Report in 2010. ?But it helped his polling."

For sitting presidents, taking a vacation requires huge security details and lots of preparation. That?s why many presidents tend to return to the same vacation homes or family retreats year after year, said Stephen Hess, senior fellow emeritus at the Brookings Institution.

Obama?s decision to forsake the Vineyard doesn?t send a particularly strong populist signal in and of itself, Hess said. People know the president is a best-selling author who can afford to vacation in seaside resorts. He?s also president of the United States, anything but an average American.

But context ? and contrast ? matter. President George H.W. Bush had a family retreat in the tony resort town of Kennebunkport, Maine, and President Kennedy vacationed at a family compound in Hyannis Port, Cape Cod. While Kennedy?s vacations solidified his glamour, Romney?s vacation has been less well received. ?I can?t remember comparable articles about Hyannis Port,? Hess said, reflecting on some of the negative press Romney has faced.

Optics aside, presidential candidates should take a vacation, experts say, in order to pace themselves, reassess their campaign?s progress, and gear up for the fall. ?The people who would oppose it are ghouls. We all try to take a vacation!? Hess said.?

Candidates who are overworked also make mistakes. ?For the Romney guys, the idea of not burning the guy out is really smart,? Devine said. He urged Obama?s aides to make sure the president gets a break, too.

?Here?s a guy who has the most difficult job in the world every single day and is facing a very, very tough campaign. He absolutely should try to take some time off,? Devine added. ?The vice president can campaign. They?ve got other surrogates who can do things. Most importantly, they?ve got a massive television campaign going on in the states right now. That?s not going to take any vacation.?

The Obama White House is not conducting any polls in search of the vacation that would play best with voters. But Obama has been highlighting a very specific kind of vacation on the campaign trail.

?The best vacation I had when I was a kid,? he told voters recently in Poland, Ohio, was when ?my grandmother and my mom and my sister, we traveled around the country on Greyhound buses and on trains and we stayed at Howard Johnsons. I was 11 and so if there was any kind of swimming pool ? it didn?t matter how big it was, right, you'd spend the whole day there.??

Scientists ID New Gene Linked to Vision Loss in Infants

MONDAY, July 30 (HealthDay News) -- A new gene associated with a rare form of blindness from birth has been identified by researchers.

According to the report published online July 29 in the journal Nature Genetics, mutations in the NMNAT1 gene are linked to Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), an inherited retinal degenerative disease that causes reduced vision in infants. Signs of vision loss are apparent in the first few months of life.

LCA is a common reason for enrolling children in schools for the blind.

This finding is a step forward in developing sight-saving gene therapy for patients with LCA, according to the researchers at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Loyola University Chicago Health Sciences Division, and their colleagues.

"The immediate benefit of this discovery is that affected patients with mutations in this new LCA gene now know the cause of their condition," study co-senior author Dr. Eric Pierce, director of the Ocular Genomics Institute at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, said in an infirmary news release.

"Scientists now have another piece to the puzzle as to why some children are born with LCA and decreased vision. The long-term goal of our research is to develop therapies to limit or prevent vision loss from these disorders," Pierce said.

NMNAT1 is the 18th identified LCA gene and is located in a region known to harbor another LCA gene.

Leber congenital amaurosis occurs in about three of 100,000 newborns, and is one of the most common causes of blindness in children, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

iPad sales propel Apple to No. 1 PC spot

3 hrs.

Apple's share of the smartphone market may have slipped last quarter, but where the iPhone slacked, the iPad picked up, propelling the company past HP an into the pole position as the number one PC manufacturer in the world. Overall PC sales jumped 12 percent compared to the same time in 2011 and nearly one in five PCs shipped last quarter sported the iconic Apple logo.

Wait! Didn't Laptop report just a few weeks back that?second quarter PC shipments were flat?and Lenovo and HP were duking it out for the global top spot, with Apple nowhere to be found? Indeed we did ? but that just shows it's all in how you look at things. Canalys,?the firm behind the latest figures, considers tablets to be PCs while Gartner and IDC don't.

To show what a difference that makes in the tabulations, consider this: HP doesn't sell consumer-orientated slates, only enterprise-focused Windows 7 tablets. The vast majority of its 13.5 million shipments are traditional desktops and notebooks. In contrast,?Apple's latest sales figures?show that the Cupertino company only moved 4 million Macs last quarter, even with all the hub-bub around the?MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Over 17 million of the 21 million PCs Apple moved last quarter were iPads.

With the tablet-friendly Windows 8 operating system looming on the horizon, don't expect the category confusion to clear anytime soon. Speaking of tablets, Canalys reports Samsung was the king of the Android hill, "more than doubling its Galaxy Tab shipments compared to a year ago."
